So did Lindsey run or not?

You'll probably see that record broken again this season -- sprinter Lindsey Lamar opted not to run after practicing with the football team on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I love the speed of the youngsters.

I think the new USF T & F facility will help us to land many more such players. On Saturday, 1,500 HS athletes competed at the USF/Steinbrenner Invitational track and field meet and Hillsborough HS won the meet and USF football signee Terrence Mitchell, as usual, stole the show:

The Terriers dominated the meet, which featured more than 1,500 athletes competing on the Bulls' new multimillion dollar track facility. Paced by its 4x100-meter relay team that posted the state's fastest electronic time of the year (41.95 seconds), Hillsborough rolled up 115 points to knock off Countryside by 21.5 points.

For Terriers coach Joe Sipp, Saturday's performance was a marked improvement over a week ago, when his squad took second to Pompano Beach Ely at the Charles Johnson Invitational.

"After that meet, we went back to work, used it as a learning experience and they had one of their best weeks of practice ever," Sipp said. "Coming into this meet, I felt pretty good about what they were going to do and they really responded today."

As usual, seniors Terrence Mitchell, Carlton Walton and Brandon McFadden produced big points for the Terriers. Mitchell won the long jump (22 feet, 4.5 inches), was second in the triple jump (44-11), won the 100 (10.90) and anchored their sizzling 4x100 relay. Walton won the triple with a lifetime best of 46-5.5, was second in the long jump (21-10) and ran the second leg on the 4x100. McFadden had the winning shot put (49-6) and was fifth in the discus (135-5).

A Terrier who had something of a coming-out party was junior Jerald Pearson, who won the 110 hurdles in 15.05 and was third in the 300 hurdles (40.73). Teammate James Hosey, a senior, also made a big impact in his debut as the third runner of their 4x100 relay.

USF's track lauded

By BILL WARD

It was one of the largest high school track meets ever held on Florida's west coast. And at the conclusion of Saturday's USF/George M. Steinbrenner Invitational, many were saying it was also the best ever staged in the area.

...But what really floored many of the 1,500 athletes and their coaches was USF's stunning new track and field facility, which was completed at a cost of approximately $3 million.

Even during the meet, there was talk among several area coaches - most of whom had not seen the facility since renovations concluded late in 2008 - of what could come next for this incredible venue.

Thoughts of hosting the state finals at USF were plentiful. There's also consideration being given of making the USF/Steinbrenner a two-day affair, where collegiate and prep events would be staged together. Or they could leave it pretty much like it is.

Notable performers

With an outstanding facility to compete at, it's little wonder there were some outstanding performers at Saturday's USF/Steinbrenner meet. Among them were:

...Hillsborough's Terrence Mitchell and Tampa Bay Tech's La'Shae White were standouts in multiple events. Mitchell won the long jump (22-4.5) and 100 (10.90), was second in the triple (44-11) and anchored the Terriers' winning 4x100 relay to a time of 41.95, which now stands No. 4 in the state.

Miami just had some of their football players break their school record to qualify for the NCAA's at 39.57. Just another comparison to our time.
