Game of the Week

Pittsburgh (7-3) at South Florida (8-1), 11:00 ESPN2

Why to watch: It's amazing how things can change in a week. Early last week the discussion around Pittsburgh football was how and when head coach Walt Harris would be fired, and now the Panthers are a win away from playing in the BCS. Hurricane Frances forced this September 6th game to be rescheduled, and that's probably a good thing for the Panthers as QB Tyler Palko and the offense are much stronger now and the team is much better overall. South Florida saw a winning season go out the door last week as DeAngelo Williams and Memphis ran wild in a 31-15 Tiger win, but a win over Pittsburgh would be a sweet end to the season. USF beat Pittsburgh 35-26 in 2001 in one of that year's stunning upsets.

Bowl implications: If Pittsburgh wins, it's in the BCS and likely to the Fiesta Bowl. A Panther loss could still mean the BCS if the Panthers are ranked higher in the BCS than Syracuse. South Florida isn't bowl eligible.

Why Pittsburgh might win: Turnovers. The Panthers have forced 21 takeaways so far while only giving it up 12 times. South Florida has forced ten turnovers but has given it up 17 times. Pittsburgh's biggest weakness is pass defense, but the Bulls can't throw and need to run to win. The Panther run D has been solid.

Why South Florida might win: All of the pressure is on Pittsburgh and as Boston College showed last week and West Virginia proved the week before, the Big East lead dog has a problem holding on. This is USF's bowl game and will can make a big national splash. To do that, the running game has to get rolling early and QB Pat Julmiste must come up with one of his better performances. That might happen against the porous Panther secondary.

Who to watch: QB Tyler Palko has grown into a national star and the face of Pittsburgh football. He had his coming out party throwing 334 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Notre Dame, and then found a way to beat West Virginia running for a score late in the fourth quarter to beat West Virginia. For USF, Julmiste has only completed 47% of his passes over the last two weeks, but he hasn't thrown an interception in his last four games.

What will happen: Don't be shocked if South Florida plays above its head and gets up early. The problem is that the Bulls aren't very good and don't have the defense to handle Palko and the Panther passing game.

CFN Prediction: Pittsburgh 31 ... South Florida 23 ...

Line: Pittsburgh -7

Must See Rating: (5 lock yourself in a room to watch - 1 Spanglish) ... 2.5

How are the Big East picks so far? ... Straight up: 40-13 ... ATS: 24-25

We need to win just to keep the CFN prediction (of 4-7) from happening and prove them wrong again!

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
