Looks like we are battling UGA for a lot more recruits than in past years.

Here's our two cents on Nickell (actually pronounced "nick-L) Robey.

The Frostproof cornerback, who at No. 15 is the highest-ranked Polk County prospect of The Sentinel's Florida Top 100, has narrowed his list of schools to the point where a decision likely will come down to Georgia and USF.

"They're the two front-runners," Frostproof Coach Brad Metheny said Monday.

The lure of playing in the Southeastern Conference is enticing enough. But the relationship Robey has forged with coaches at Georgia, the academics there, plus the comfort level he'd have with former prep teammate Carlton Thomas (a Bulldogs redshirt freshman tailback), will help the folks in Athens. If both Robey and Thomas are at UGA, Frostproof fans could caravan to watch a couple of their former hometown stars.

For USF, the case for proximity is obvious, with the Tampa campus about 90 minutes away. Plus, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Robey would be a marquee signing for the program. He'd probably have a chance to contribute right away.

Metheny said Robey's original plan was take the process into the fall and make three official visits. That still may happen, "but I think he'll end up making a decision relatively soon."

Robey, the state's No. 4 overall defensive back prospect in the state on the Sentinel's position rankings, attended camps at both Florida and Tennessee this offseason, where he flashed sub-4.4 laser times in the 40-yard dash, which paired nicely with an outstanding junior season in track when he long-jumped 24 feet and tripled 46-11. Robey also is a 3.3 student, Metheny said.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
