Dr. Phillips' Kenny Shaw makes Gridiron Kings roster

By Stephen Ruiz

Sentinel Staff Writer

Dr. Phillips senior wide receiver Kenny Shaw is one of 23 players -- and the only Central Florida player -- listed so far on the roster for the Champion Gridiron Kings, a high school football event scheduled for July 23-25 at Disney's Wide World of Sports.

All of the invitees are from the Class of 2010.

The event, which eventually will include 64 players, is a competition involving football's seven skill positions -- quarterback, running back, tight end, wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback and safety.

Shaw is ranked ninth on Bill Buchalter's list of Florida's top 100 college football recruits. He has yet to commit to a school but is considering Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan and USF.He caught a Dr. Phillips-record 64 passes for 914 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Besides Shaw, seven other Florida high school prospects have received invitations: Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer tight end Gerald Christian and safety Matthew Elam, Treasure Coast linebacker Jeff Luc, Miami Central quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey, Ocala Trinity Catholic wide receiver Kadron Boone, Miramar wide receiver Ivan McCartney III and Niceville running back Roy Finch.

The rest of the invitees are cornerback A.J. Marshall of Durham (N.C.) Southern; tight end Alex Smith of Lakota West (Ohio); Newport linebacker Cecil Whiteside, La Costa Canyon wide receiver Kenny Stills, East Lake linebacker Tony Jefferson and Huntington tight end Chris Martin of California; Timpview (Utah) safety Chris Badger; Cass Technical (Mich.) defensive back Dior Mathis; Good Counsel defensive back Louis Young and Thomas Jefferson linebacker Nick Forbes of Maryland; Hightower linebacker Shaun Lewis, Lancaster defensive back Tyler Stephenson and Thurgood Marshall safey Toney Hurd of Texas; King running back Silas Redd Jr. of Connecticut; and Thibodaux wide receiver Trovon Reed of Louisiana.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
