UAB Football Team Preps For USF Indoors Wednesday

Blazers one week from nationally televised tilt

Oct. 27, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mother nature had a hand in UAB's football practice Wednesday afternoon as showers moved the Blazers' practice indoors. UAB continues preparations for next Wednesday night's nationally televised clash with USF at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Legion Field. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

"We lost the first hour of practice and didn't get quite as much done as we would have liked," said UAB head coach Watson Brown concerning the affect of the weather. "The good thing is that is was our put-in day, staring on South Florida. I think we'll be alright, but we need to get outside tomorrow. We just got started on the game plan, but we've got a few extra days and we don't want to throw too much at them at once, so I don't think this hurt us that bad today."

The Blazers (5-2, 3-1 C-USA) suffered their first conference loss of the season on Oct. 23, as they fell at Tulane, 59-55. UAB and the Green Wave combined for 1,174 yards of offense. Darrell Hackney finished 23-of-38 passing for 448 yards and two touchdowns for the Blazers, while Roddy White led all receivers with 253 yards on 10 receptions and had a 28-yard touchdown catch. White's yardage total was the second-highest recorded in Conference USA history.

USF (2-4, 1-3) is looking to snap a three-game losing streak when it comes to Birmingham. The Bulls fell at Louisville, 41-9, on Oct. 23. Quarterback Pat Julmiste has played in six games for USF, completing 55 passes for 687 yards and four touchdowns this season. Andre Hall leads USF, averaging 91.2 rushing yards per game.

It's a little scary when UAB's QB threw for 448 yds in one game and Julmiste has 687 all season.  Hopefully this is another TCU type game for him.

Even scarier is 324 yard of Julmiste's came in one game @TCU.  Meaning PJ has only 367 in four games (He was injured at USC.).  :(

Hackney is a good, BIG QB.  Large enough to play LB... Not quite 300 lbs like Jared Lorenzo (formerly with KY) who beat up on USF, if I remember correctly.

Still, as bad as this USF team is, it is vastly better than the one that lost to Lorenzo.

UAB's defense is not as good as U of L's ... (59 points allowed to Tulane!)... so, if our defense can play as well as they did last week (as the first team all season to hold UofL under 200 yards rushing), then it will be a GREAT game.

In my book, the OVER would be the safe play for this one.  A  regular offensive shootout.

another embarassing loss on tv

but at least we made 5 dollars

there is an old saying on broadway

"never open a show until it is ready"

we should have never agreed to go on national tv until we were ready

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
