And Oklahoma is in the same boat.

A way to analyze is to look at our penalties because primarily a lot of USF's penalties are the type where we're trying to secure an edge, off-sides, illegal motion, holding, blocking in the back.

teams like OK, FSU, and USC are so talented at times their penalties come from over-aggressiveness, and shear stupidity.  All three teams preach very aggressive play, akin to Leavitt, so they play through the whistle.

I doubt the penalties completely subside as our talent improves, but i think the hair-pulling mundane and ones like defensive off-sides, or illegal motion will drop considerably.

I always find it funny about penalties because the difference is always so nominal from top to bottom.  One or two bad games on a season and a traditionally great team penalty wise can be on the bottom half.

It's also interesting that you if you look at the ranking of most penalties and most penalty yards you find that the top 40, and bottom 40 teams have the most success.  Oddly it's the middle of the road teams that are usually scattered with mediocrity or crappy teams.  Take the bottom 40, aside from the names in the bottom ten mentioned, UF, Texas, Oregon State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Oregon, Boise State, BYU, OKST, and Houston also reside.  Not bad company at all.

If we can eliminate the compensation penalties that hurt us in the big games, where players sometimes need to gain an edge...then I am happy with that.  I'll take the usual ultra-aggressive, hard hitting, tough fouls all day long.  It works for USC, UF, OK, and others.

Something that has not been mentioned is the Big East refs. I don't have stats to back it up, but it seems to me that throw many more flags than other conferences. In watching SEC games, I see things all the time that are not called that would be in the BE. Other conferences seem to have a more "let em play" approach.

Discipline. If we have it. We would win more. Fundamentals. Those good teams you mentioned, your right, they have the skill to win games and single players who can win games. We beat ourselves alot of games. Were getting better though. We used to be red-zone, false start, false start...I know everyone remembers those.
