exciting

If you're sailing on the boat it is absolutely exciting.  It takes abs of steel, good strength and endurance, balance and quick thinking to be successfull in sailboat racing.  Dinghy racers need to be well versed in swimming too!  >:D

USF finished in 10th place in the Women's National Championship. Considering that USF wasn't even ranked coming into the event, that's a pretty good showing. Nice to see we finished ahead of the US Naval Academy.  ;D

TAMPA -- The University of South Florida women's sailing team finished in 10th place at the 2008 ICSA Women's National Championship in Newport, Rhode Island.

Hosted jointly by Brown University and Salve Regina, the conditions were excellent for the Bulls on the final day of competition.  The winds were varying from 22 knots down to 5 knots.

USF sailors came into the championship unranked but were able to post a showing that impressed their head coach.

Complete Standings | May 27 Recap | Championship Blog

“With four freshmen, two juniors, and only one senior at Nationals, the team should have some very competitive years in the future,†said USF head coach Allison Jolly.  “We are happy with the results and the way we represented the University of South Florida the last three days.â€Â

The Bulls finished with 351 points.  The 2008 Championship went to Boston College with a combined low score of 189.

USF, St. Mary’s, Stanford and College of Charleston were the only schools to finish in the top-10 that are not located in the Northeast.  USF was the only school from Florida in the championship.

Kim Witkowski ('09) sailed with Liz Foy ('08), Christine Sayler ('11), and Diana Cabili ('11) to finish 13th in A division.

Rachael Silverstein ('11) sailed with Darby Smith ('11), Ash Landes ('09), and Christine Sayler ('11) to finish 9th in B division. The work was Silverstein was the second best among all freshman skippers.

Of the 30 schools taking to the water in Newport, only eight qualified to compete in all three events: Boston College (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), Brown University (Providence, R.I.), College of Charleston (Charleston, S.C.), Georgetown University (Washington, D.C.), St. Mary’s College (St. Mary’s City, Md.), Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif.), USF (St. Petersburg, Fla.), and the University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisc.).

The Bulls will also compete in the ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship May 30-June 1 and the ICSA/Gill National Championship June 2-4.

GO BULLS!!!

I'll be in Boston (Newton, actually) next week.  Maybe one evening for a beer or three?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
