Alston Heading To USF

Armwood defensive lineman Josh Alston has come to a decision - he will take his Florida Bright Futures academic scholarship and attend USF.

Alston had narrowed his decision to accepting a football scholarship offer to the Air Force Academy or going to USF as a student. Alston also had scholarship offers from Army and Navy but had ruled out signing with either of those programs prior to last Wednesday’s National Signing Day.

Alston said Monday he has qualified for 75 percent scholarship money through Florida Bright Futures, but he believes he will get into the 100 percent qualification range after he receives his latest SAT score. Alston said he only needed to improve his test score 10 points. Alston added he also received word recently that he qualified for an additional $1,500 scholarship, which will go towards books. Alston will commute to USF’s campus.

Alston, a Tribune All-Hillsborough County honorable mention selection as a senior after tallying 44 tackles and five sacks, said Monday he was uncertain as to whether or not he would attempt to walk on at USF. He said he’s spoken to Hawks coach Sean Callahan about it, and that’s it’s his understanding the option is there. Alston added he’s continuing to stay in shape by working out at Armwood, and he hinted that he very well could end up attempting to continue his football career.

“I have a feeling it’s going to be pretty hard for me to walk away from football,†Alston said.
