Hey SWAtpamike you seem to be in the know.  To Check a firearm on an airplane it has to be in a hard, locked case, but can this case be inside a regular suitcase?  All ammo has to be unloaded and in a seperate bag correct?

Hi, ee, I'm tpamike's wife; I got the answers to your questions from Mike.  The hard sided locked case containing the firearm cannot be inside another suitcase.  It has to be separate so they know it contains a firearm. You will have to check it at the airline counter, then you will most likely be escorted by an airline employee to the TSA x-ray machine where they will x-ray it and send it on to be loaded on the plane. Be sure you have the key to the case, and don't accidentally lock the key inside! :)  When you arrive in El Paso, the case will probably not be on the regular baggage belt.  Airlines require the case to be taken directly to the baggage services office, where you can retrieve it by showing your baggage claim stub.

As for the ammo, be sure that both the firearm and any magazines are unloaded.  Ammo should be packed in the original box it came in (no loose bullets tossed in a cardboard box).  The TSA website says ammo may be in the same locked case as the firearm, but it must be in the original packaging.

TSA page on traveling with firearms: http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm

FYI - Walmart sells 100 rounds of 9mm or 50 rounds of .40 for $15. Mike's just going to buy ammo in El Paso rather than taking it on the plane.

In case you were wondering, you can get Shiner Bock on tap at Bar Louie at the International Mall. Great place to go for some micro brewed pints and Tuesday $1 hamburger nights are awesome.

If you have time, eat at KiKi's and order the Briscuit taco plate w/side of quacamole and I like frijoles negros or frijoles churro over the refried beans.  It is pure local.  My wife got the recommendation from an El Pasoan.  Food was excellent. Manager chatted me up and a local advised us to go to the Horse Blanket for soviegners and eat breakfast at "Raycons" or something like that for huevos rancheros.  Its near the Sun Bowl.   KiKi's is on Pierdra.  It runs parrallel to Alabama.

Amber... you can get Shiner Bock at Publix in West Chase.

Fresh Market in south Tampa (Henderson and Dale Mabry) also has it. I picked some up last weekend when I visited my parents for Christmas.

If any of you are staying for a day or two after the game and you have a car, I can't recommend the Carlsbad Caverns National Park enough. It's about two and a half hours from El Paso in New Mexico, on a desolate highway with nothing around you for miles and miles, but it's absolutely worth it when you get there.

The State Line BBQ was great.  The baby back ribs were awesome, and the bread pudding was killer.

We got tamales from Chilitos in Las Cruces, which were also really good (didn't get a chance to bring some back home though  :( )  Plus, a fantastic Mexican breakfast at the Mesilla Valley Kitchen in LC.

The boy and I did a wonderful day trip in NM...driving thru White Sands Missle Range (fortunately, we were spared as moving targets), but we got to see White Sands National Monument, then there was an amazing transition from desert mountains to alpine mountains and forest once we went thru the tunnel before Cloudcroft, then we drove to Ruidoso, where we saw Inn of the Mountain Gods, then towards Ski Apache.  It was pretty wild to see all that snow up there.

Then, went hiking at Dripping Springs right outside LC.  The boulders and mountains out there are stunning.  Stopped at New Mexico State University to check out their football stadium.  Pretty impressive...built into a manmade bowl.

Was hoping to do the gondola outside El Paso, but it was closed on the only two days we could do it (Tues & Wed).  Go figure!  And we passed on Juarez.

Besides the ugly 4-hour event who's name shall go unmentioned, the overall trip was fantastic for us, and we look forward to going back someday.

thats pretty awesome.

i can probably get you hookups at hotels and car rentals if you need. Marriott, Holiday Inn, and Hampton. Advantage for car rental

stay near the airport, its 15-20 minutes away from the Sun Bowl and most of the area hotels will offer shuttles to and from the Sun Bowl.

Mexican Food:

Carlos & Mickeys - 5-7 minutes from the airport. visually pleasing, giant margaritas, good food, and awesome fried ice cream for dessert.

L & Js Cafe - 7-10 minutes from the airport. Mom and Pops place thats been in the business for years. Great authentic mexican food, the green chicken enchiladas are my favorite. its a little hole in the wall, but its clean and the service is friendly.

Steaks:

5 minutes from the airport - Holiday Inn has a great steakhouse. Good prime rib and Ribeye.

Cattle Baron - 3 minutes from the airport. good steaks, good patti melts, and a pretty nice salad bar.

http://www.cattlebaron.com/

Cattlemans - if your willing to drive out of the city limits, its about 30 minutes away from the airport. restaurant thats on a ranch. great steaks, good service, and you can choose your cut if you want something thats not on the menu. you can also walk around and check out the buffalo, horses, goats, etc. they have out there.

Italian:

Dominics - locally owned. about 5 minutes from the airport. beautiful place with great food, and the service is really nice. they even have a little chocolate store there.

http://dominics.homestead.com/

Cappettos - 10 minutes away from the airport. another local restaurant. great service. really awesome veil.

http://www.cappettos.com/

Adovinos - Across the street from the Sun Bowl. Really good pizzas, sandwiches, and salads.

http://www.ardovinospizza.com/

Sorrentos - Probably my favorite place in here. The sauces are just great, and probably the closest youll get to truely authentic italian.

http://www.sorrentoitalianrestaurant.com/

As for places to get a drink, theres a strip of bars near the Sun Bowl. Right across the street, and Ardovinos is on the same strip.

You have Cinncinati bar (my home away from home). its a sports bar only problem, its a little small. no dress code

O2 lounge - nice place with some hott girls that go there. dress code is enforced, but its not too strict. no hats, jeans, nice shoes, and a nice shirt will do.

G2 and Danes - also nice places where they have some hott women. dress code would be the same as O2. Danes i heard has some great steaks, but i havent tried them yet.

there are other bars around the area, all within walking distance. probably about 8 or 9 others.

as for clubs, there are really only two that get pretty good. club 69 and club 101. both of these have dress codes similar to the others i mentioned. since its a saturday, 101 will more than likely have retro night, so its a nice older crowd. people around our age. club 69 tends to attract the younger more slutty women since its 18 and over whereas club 101 is strictly 21 and over.

there are several other places around club 69 that are pretty nice. Vanilla Lounge being the nicest one. lots of women in that area (downtown area, about 10 minutes from the Sun Bowl.) They also have Shadow Lounge and 1914

The clubs and bars i mentioned will be the most popular spots on the day of the Sun Bowl.
