A Record 87 Panthers Named to Big East Academic All-Star Team

A Record 87 Panthers Named to Big East Academic All-Star Team

7/13/2004

The total topped last year's mark of 86 and was the eighth consecutive year the number has increased or remained the same.

PITTSBURGH A record 87 University of Pittsburgh student-athletes have been named Big East Academic All-Stars for their outstanding academic and athletic performance, announced Monday by the conference. The honorees must be letterwinners who have posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and completed a minimum of two semesters of academic work.

The number of honorees eclipsed the highest total ever for the University of Pittsburgh, established last year with 86 in 2003. The Panthers have increased their number of Big East Academic All-Stars in each of the past eight years except for 2002 when the number remained the same. Fifty-two of the 87 recipients have been Big East Academic All-Stars in previous seasons and eight student-athletes have earned their fourth nomination.

Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) of men’s swimming and diving, Sheila Stufflet (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson Senior) of women’s basketball, Sarah Grant (Simi Valley, Calif./Seneca Valley), Jenny Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott), Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) and Kelli Tielking (Damascus, Md./Damascus) of women’s swimming and diving, Elizabeth Bayne (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) of women’s track and field and Michael Stellefson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) of men’s track and field are the eight Panthers who have earned their fourth Big East Academic All-Star honor.

"The community should be extremely proud to have this group of students representing the University of Pittsburgh," Director of Academic Support Services Michael Farabaugh said. "Their dedication to academic excellence shows a commitment to being the best they can be in the classroom, as well as on the field of play. The families, coaches, faculty and administration who have played a role in the success of these students should be congratulated as well."

The 2003-04 University of Pittsburgh Big East Academic All-Stars include all varsity sports except football, which are named separately, as well as wrestling (affiliated with Eastern Wrestling League) and women’s gymnastics (East Atlantic Gymnastics League).

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
