It's a myth that the horse Upset beat the greatest race horse ever, Man O'War, in 1919 and thus the term "Upset" was used. While the 100-1 longshot Upset did win thanks to an unfair start that had Man O' War circling away from the starting line when the gun off, the word "upset" was around long before that. In fact, the verb "upset" was traced back to 1865 and the noun "upset" was traced back to 1877. It is from the Middle English word "upsetten" and the word basically means to overturn something, which is what a sports upset is today. So it was actually a coincidence that the horse named Upset was responsible for one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

And now you know the rest of the story.
