QB Grothe Held Out Of Practice Again

TAMPA - University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe was held out of practice for the second consecutive day while continuing to wear a protective boot on his injured right foot.

The freshman, who is expected to play Saturday at North Carolina, hopes to return to practice today.

"It hurts a little bit, but I'll be all right," Grothe said. "Once my adrenaline gets going I won't even be thinking about it."

The morning after the injury was a different story.

"It looked like a balloon. It was pretty swollen," Grothe said. "But I got a lot of treatment the last couple of days and it's almost back to normal, swelling-wise. It's not hurting nearly as bad as it did Sunday morning when I woke up."

STEPPIN' OUT: USF (4-2) goes out of conference for the final time against the Tar Heels (1-4). USF closes the season with five consecutive Big East games.

North Carolina is 0-4 against Division I-A opponents, having been outscored 135-40.

"They've played some pretty good people," Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said. "We've got our hands full, for sure. Hopefully we'll play a good game."

North Carolina's losses were against No. 24 Rutgers, No. 22 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Clemson and Miami.
