USF Pondering Redshirt Decisions

TAMPA - A decision whether to redshirt senior offensive tackle Thed Watson and senior defensive end Tavarious Robinson won’t be made until a few days before the Bulls’ Sept. 2 season opener against McNeese State, Coach Jim Leavitt said.

Watson started eight games last season and was named this summer to the Outland Trophy watch list. Robinson started five games the past two seasons. Neither player has been working out with USF’s first units.

You asked for it, so here it is. A look at USF’s depth chart after the first two weeks of practice. Remember this is not guaranteed to be USF’s starting lineup for the Sept. 2 season opener against McNeese State, only my best guess at where they stand after Saturday’s scrimmage.

NW MISSISSIPPI C.C. - Second team NJCAA All-American at Northwest Mississippi...First team all-state and all-region...Second team all-state as a freshman.

LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL - An all-state performer in basketball at Lakewood High...All-Suncoast, all-county and all-district in football and basketball...Played only one season of football in high school...Cousin to USF running back Andre Hall

PERSONAL - Born July 13, 1985 in St. Petersburg...Son of Rick Watson and Sophia Fields...Has two younger brothers and a younger sister.

SOUTH FLORIDA – 2005: Played in two early season games against Florida A&M and UCF...2004: Sat out NCAA-mandated transfer season.

Why would CJL redhirt Watson? Why would you redshirt an Outland Trophy watch list tackle this year? Next year we would have two seniors at right tackle and a solid starter on the left side. Depth alone would speak against a redshirt this year and the possible waste of a good OT makes me wonder why?
