Leavitt Says Quarterbacks Working Hard, But Inconsistent

TAMPA, FLA. (August 12, 2006) – After the first of two practices for the University of South Florida today, Jim Leavitt addressed the current quarterback situation, saying their play is “inconsistent, but they are working hard.”

Leavitt went on to say, “If they’re all equal, Pat (Julmiste) will start.” Of today’s work at quarterback, Leavitt said, “Pat looked good. Matt (Grothe) was shaky at the start but he did some good things in the scrimmage work at the end. And I’m surprised out how well Grant (Gregory) is doing because he worked at defensive back all spring. Anthony Severino did some good things in the snaps he took.”

On the overall status of summer camp, Leavitt said, “We still have a lot of work to do. We’re not ready today.”

The team will have an afternoon practice at 3:45 p.m., with meetings and a short walk through on the schedule Sunday. Monday brings another two-a-day schedule with practices at 8:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.

E.T. you may be onto something. In that quote it sounds as if Leavitt is trying to inspire (Grothe) someone to beat out PJ. It sounds to me as if PJ is relagated to being the "if all else fails' QB.

I wonder when CJL is going to face the fact that its not every QBs fault that they cannot run this offense. Its suffering design flaws. It can work if all the planets align or if you totally outman an opponent, but the problem is that they only happens once or twice per year.

I'm sure many of us have big question marks about the offense, but look at it this way. We survived our initial season in the Big East and went to a bowl, not to mention killing the gnats and ranked Louisville.

Whatever happens this year, it will be pretty good football. This staff will pull it together.

The question for us fans is what games will we be there (commit to) and how many people will we bring along?
