Rutgers Announces Volleyball Schedule

Eight Home Matches, Five NCAA Tourney Teams Highlight Schedule

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Eight home matches and five opponents who advanced to NCAA Tournament competition a year ago highlight the 2006 Rutgers volleyball schedule.

Rutgers will start the season with three consecutive tournaments, beginning with the James Madison/Days Inn Tournament Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25-26. The Scarlet Knights will face Duquesne at 11:30 a.m. and UNC Asheville at 4:30 p.m. on the 25th, followed by contests against Canisius (2:00 p.m.) and the host Dukes (7:00 p.m.) on the 26th.

RU will participate in the Temple Classic the following weekend, facing Maine at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1. Rutgers will take on the host Owls Saturday, Sept. 2, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a clash with 2005 NCAA Tournament first-round qualifier Kansas at 3:00 p.m.

Long Island, a first-round NCAA Tournament participant last season, will be Rutgers’ first-round foe at the Harvard Invitational Friday, Sept. 8, at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Scarlet Knights will take on Harvard at 1:00 p.m. and Binghamton, a 2005 first-round NCAA team, at 4:00 p.m.

The Scarlet Knights will make their season debut at the College Avenue Gym Saturday, Sept. 23, when they host 2005 BIG EAST champion and NCAA Tournament regional semifinalist Notre Dame at 12:00 p.m. Rutgers will finish the weekend with a home match against DePaul Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2:00 p.m.

RU will end its four-match homestand with contests against Pittsburgh Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2:00 p.m. and West Virginia Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2:00 p.m.

Rutgers will play its next five matches on the road against BIG EAST foes, starting Saturday, Oct. 7, at Louisville at 2:00 p.m. The Cardinals reached the Sweet Sixteen of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will also take on Cincinnati Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2:00 p.m., Villanova Saturday, Oct. 14, at 2:00 p.m., Georgetown Friday, Oct. 20, at 8:00 p.m., and South Florida Sunday, Oct. 22, at 2:00 p.m.

The Scarlet Knights will return to New Brunswick to host Marquette Friday, Oct. 27, at 7:00 p.m., followed by a home contest against Syracuse Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2:00 p.m. RU will take a break from BIG EAST action, hosting Fordham Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m. before finishing its home slate Sunday, Nov. 5, against Seton Hall at 2:00 p.m.

Rutgers will complete its regular-season schedule with matches at St. John’s Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1:00 p.m. and Connecticut Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m.

The top eight teams will qualify for the 2006 BIG EAST Tournament, to be held Nov. 17-19 in Cincinnati, OH.

Rutgers posted an 11-16 overall record and a 6-8 mark in BIG EAST play last season under the direction of first-year head coach Orlando Gonzalez.
