The Series: Thursday’s contest versus the Cardinals will mark the 52nd meeting between USF and Louisville all-time with the Bulls holding a 33-18 edge in the series history. The last meeting between these two teams was on May 26, 2005, resulting in an 11-1 (seven inning) win for USF at the C-USA Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss.

USF To Tangle With Louisville In BIG EAST Three-Game Series

TAMPA, Fla. (April 12, 2006) – Coming off a 4-3 victory over in-state rival UCF, the University of South Florida baseball team (15-19, 5-7 BIG EAST) will turns its attention back towards conference play, hosting the Louisville Cardinals (15-18 6-3 BIG EAST) in a three-game series this week.  

Having snapped an eight-game losing streak, USF looks to end a string of consecutive conference losses (6) with a win over Louisville starting Thursday. Different from the team’s normal Friday, Saturday, Sunday series, this week’s matchup will begin on Thursday, April 13 (7 p.m.) due to Easter.  

USF enters this week’s series hitting .282 with 11 home runs and 158 RBI. Senior Kris Howell, who hit the game-winning RBI-double during Tuesday’s 4-3 win over the Golden Knights, leads USF with a .344 batting average. The Tierra Verde, Fla., native has tallied 15 RBI and 20 runs scored. Freshman Addison Maruszak enters Thursday’s contest batting .318 with 20 RBI and 22 runs scored. His 10 doubles on the year leads the squad.  

The Bulls’ pitching staff enters the Louisville series with a 4.72 ERA, striking out 277 batters in 312 and two-thirds innings. Getting the nod Thursday will be junior right-hander Casey Hudspeth. Hudspeth comes into Thursday’s game leading the BIG EAST with 62 strikeouts. A win on Thursday would be Hudspeth’s 20th of his USF career. Sophomore Daniel Thomas will make his 10th start of the season on Friday. The Tampa, Fla., native is looking for his second win of the season, entering this week’s series with a 5.04 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 50 innings. Saturday’s starter will be Davis Bilardello. The Vero Beach, Fla., native leads USF’s starters with a 3.91 ERA. Bilardello has recorded 34 Ks in 50 and two-thirds innings of action this season.

USF comes into the series trailing Louisville in the BIG EAST standings. Thursday will mark the 52nd meeting all-time between the two teams with USF holding a 33-18 edge in the series history.
