TARS TOO MUCH FOR MOCCASINS

LAKELAND - John Thinnes scored 23 points to lead four Tars in double figures as Rollins College defeated Florida Southern, 76-56, in men's basketball Wednesday night.

Rollins (9-4, 3-1) scored the first seven points and never trailed in dealing Florida Southern (10-4, 1-2) its second worst Sunshine State Conference loss in school history. Thinnes scored 11 of his points in the first 71/2 minutes as the Tars would take a 19-4 lead. Three of his three-point field goals came during that stretch and the junior guard would add two more in the second half to finish five-of-eight from behind the arc.

The Tars would lead by as many as 22 in the first half before the Moccasins went on an 11-2 run sparked by seven points from Michael Simms. However, it was Thinnes and Rollins who closed out the first-half scoring, giving the Tars a 41-26 lead at the break.

The Moccasins looked to make a game of it in the early stages of the second half, out-scoring the Tars 12-6 in the first five minutes, and cutting the deficit to nine on a 3-pointer by Dale Parsons. However, Rollins would then out-score Florida Southern 9-0 over the next 5:38 to go ahead by 18. The Mocs never got closer than 14 the rest of the night. Their only baskets over the final 15 minutes of the game were 3-pointers by Simms and Parsons, and a pair of field goals in the final 1:07 by Parsons and Garrett Hull.

Rollins finished the night shooting 50 percent from the floor and held Florida Southern to just 34 percent. The Tars also dominated the paint with a 32-10 advantage and out-rebounded the Moccasins for the first time in their last 12 meetings.

While Thinnes scored 23 for Rollins, he got plenty of help from Deon Troupe (14 points), Jonny Reibel (12 points and seven assists), and Isaac Codrey (11 points off the bench).

Dominic Girod led Florida Southern with a season-high 14 points, connecting on five-of-nine shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers. Parsons and Simms each scored 13, with Parsons converting a three shots from behind the arc.

The win marked the fourth year in a row Rollins won at Florida Southern, a first for the Tars since they won six straight visits from 1951-56.

Florida Southern, which ended a six-game homestand, will travel to Barry on Saturday for its next game at 4:00 p.m.
