Good for the Big East!Defensive anchor expected to returnBy GREG AUMAN, Times Staff WriterPublished January 11, 2006--------------------------------------------------------------------------------TAMPA - He hasn't officially announced his plans, but all signs point to Bulls junior linebacker Stephen Nicholas holding off on the NFL draft and returning for his senior year. Like running back Andre Hall last year, Nicholas submitted his name to the NFL's advisory council for underclassmen to get a better sense of where he might be selected in the April draft. And like Hall, Nicholas was told he likely wouldn't be taken on the first day. Based on that response, a very happy coach Jim Leavitt said Nicholas is leaning toward returning for his final season, a major boost for what could be USF's best defense ever.Nicholas' father, Lebon, said last week that his son was going to enter the draft if he was projected to be taken in the first or second round and that it would be difficult to leave school if he were going any lower.Nicholas, who will graduate this spring with a degree in communications, earned second-team All-Big East honors after finishing second on the Bulls with 89 tackles. He had 91/2 tackles for a loss and forced two fumbles as USF's starting weakside linebacker.
