to 2015.

IHMO, they will regret this move in 3yrs.

had they done that during the last coach's first season they would have been stuck with a large contract.

the difference is that Weiss is an offensive genius.  he plays an exciting brand of football and the alumni love him.

They never warmed up to TW the same way.

They can always fire Weiss if he falls on his face, but i don't see it happening.

he'll have to pay to bolt for the NFL.

I don't think he will leave for a while.  He's in a dream job for him.

My only disagreement with this extension now is Notre Dame has not seen one recruiting class from Weiss.

The only thing this contract does is lock ND (a university with so many wealthy alumni, that money isn't a big issue) into paying some money (minimum of which would be a buyout).  Not a big deal.  The benefit is that he is locked up (or he would have to buyout of the contract himself) for 10 years... so they have a good coach for a long time, or they pay money and fire him.   Locking him in for 10 years at least says to recruits... this is our man.  That will help Weiss out that much more.

I don't see any negatives to this since money isn't really an issue.

While I belive they needed to lock him up for recruiting purposes, signing him like this wasn't the "greatest" idea. Weis has beaten one ranked team, 1 team with a winning record, and lost two other games. I'm not saying he isn't good, but there comes a point where you say wait a minute lets see how this pans out. Willingham started 8-0 although he did not blow anyone out of the water he did play 5 ranked teams in his 1st 8 games.
