WALK-ON IMPRESSES: Of the first-year Bulls who could make an impact this fall, one is defensive back Walt Smith, a 5-foot-10, 180-pound walk-on from Bartow who transferred from Ellsworth (Iowa) Junior College.

"He's a pretty dang good athlete," co-defensive coordinator Rick Kravitz said.

Smith was a running back at Ellsworth and hadn't played cornerback since high school, but told USF coaches it was his natural position.

"When he wanted to come here, he said, "Coach, I can compete and play with these guys,"' Kravitz said. "I said, "I thought you were a running back,' and he said, "I always told the coaches up there I was a defensive back."'

Kravitz said Orlando's Tyller Roberts, getting a look at corner and safety, is the freshman most likely to play this fall on defense.

THIS AND THAT: The Bulls return to two-a-days in full pads today with three weeks to prepare for the Sept.3 opener at Penn State.

We could use all the help at DB we can get.

I'm glad to see that Roberts is likely to play. He had two interceptions in the Cali-Florida All-Star game this year.

...what's up with this headline:

"USF: Fourth player quits"

I realize that you probably did not write the headline, but ultimately it is your work that is diminished by such an inaccurate headline.

Last time I checked Anderson, Coleman, Carter and Spires did not quit and would love to be playing this Fall. DeArmas is the only kid who has quit.

you're completely right about the headline, first in that i didn't write it, but more so that it's just plain inaccurate. dearmas is the fourth player gone from the class, as i wrote, but he's the first one to quit; the other three never even practiced.

i'll apologize for the headline - leavitt, rightfully, wasn't happy about it this morning. we should have something in the paper tomorrow to address the inaccuracy.

Greg...In the meantime can't they change it in the online edition, so people don't keep reading it FOREVER?

It's a good sign of the development of a program when you get some good players walking on not just practice guys
