Bulls Lose One, Could Gain Another

Published: Aug 15, 2005

TAMPA - University of South Florida freshman OG Chris DeArmas left the program, but former Georgia Tech QB Patrick Carter might end up back at USF after all.

DeArmas, one of only two incoming offensive linemen in USF's 2005 recruiting class, decided to give up football and will attend a college near his home in Miami, his father, Jesse DeArmas, said.

Carter, who was supposed to transfer to USF this summer but instead went to Florida before leaving after a few practices, said he'll meet with Coach Jim Leavitt about returning to USF.

"There's a lot of things being considered," Carter said. "I want to try to go in and find the best opportunity to play."

In February, Carter said he was transferring to USF. He was expected at USF until about a month ago, when he told Leavitt he wasn't coming. Swayed by former Florida QB Jesse Palmer, Carter switched to Florida, but left the program last week.

Besides USF, Carter said he's considering playing quarterback at a junior college or a Division I-AA school this fall and then returning to Division I-A in 2006. If Carter attends USF this fall, he must sit out the 2005 season, but would have two years' eligibility remaining.

A quarterback at Lakewood High, Carter said he would play wide receiver and return punts if he came to USF.

Because Carter changed from USF to UF, Carter said Leavitt told him his scholarship would be used on someone else and he would have to walk on.

"I have to make a decision soon," Carter said.

The loss of DeArmas leaves Danny Tolley as USF's only freshman scholarship offensive lineman. As a senior at Miami Southwest High, DeArmas was ranked as the nation's 19th-best guard prospect by Rivals.com and ranked as the state's 44th-best recruit by The Tampa Tribune.

"Chris said he wants to focus on academics," Leavitt said. "He's a great kid. I wish him the best."

Not that my opinion really matters, but I'd feel better if he just told Carter to shove it.  We've got depth at QB, and this kid chose to go to UF after committing to transfer here.  Screw him.  However, at least if Leavitt lets him back on, he isn't rewarding him with a schollie.  I'll be satisfied with that.

This looks like a fishing trip. All the kid wants is playing time, so if he makes it via walk-on, fine-great-wonderful. Otherwise, give him the home version of the "Evan Kraky QB Award" and drop him off at the Greyhound station.
