Vikings reach agreement on Culpepper contract, including hefty raise

Kevin Seifert,  Star Tribune

August 8, 2005 VIKE0808.OL

The Vikings reached agreement today on a restructured contract for quarterback Daunte Culpepper, one that includes a major pay raise.

Rob Brzezinski, the Vikings' vice president of football operations, confirmed the deal was struck. He would not reveal specifics but called the pay raise "significant."

Culpepper signed a 10-year, $102 million contract prior to the 2003 season. That deal was largely incentive-based, however. Culpepper received a $2.5 million roster bonus in March, but according to NFL Players Association records, his base salary for this season would have been $540,000.

The new deal will guarantee Culpepper higher salaries throughout his career with the Vikings.

"He's a premier player in this league," Brzezinski said.

Let's see how he does without Randy Moss and a questionable running game. Too bad Culpepper can't spend the prime of his career with a real coach. Tice is just terrible.

CB..I actually agree with you on the Tice part.  Their running game should be fine this year.  I think they will be better off without Moss, but this is where coaching and play calling/designing will be so important.

Smazza,  What is monkey pay???

Tice is a terrible coach who reminds me of a caveman.

Daunte showed that while he is very talented, he needs help.  The Philly game on Monday night proved it.  While he had that costly fumble, he had to do all the work because his line did not protect him, especially at left tackle.  His protection was pathetic and while I am not a Vikings fan and didn't mind them losing, DC really proved his worth by singlehandedly keeping them in the game when they should have been blown out.

Guest S.  Bien

Culpepper proved last year he was as good as advertised when Moss went down for the last half of the season.  No Moss, a shoddy running game, and some on again, off again receivers and yet he still pushed the team to the playoffs.

No, Culpepper's the real deal, and right on the cusp of being one of the top 5 QB's in the league (actually he probably is talent-wise but his coaching sucks so his teams suck and therefore Culpepper isn't rated like a winner as the other top 5 QB's in the league- Manning, Vick, Favre, McNabb, and Brady- in fact if Tice and crew don't get it going he may get passed by another young gun, Byron Leftwich.  Culpepper deserves it all and if he would just get a good coach in Minneapolis he would probably be top3 because he'd win championships and then those other QB's would have nothing on him.

To bad UCF and Culpepper couldn't have had a collison course a few years later.   UCF never really capitalized on having one of the best QB's to come out of FL on their rostrer.

Scary that I almost agree with everything sbien wrote.  I do not consider vick or Leftwich a star QB by any means. Vick gets his hype from the media and leftwich has shown nothing so far.

UCF did blow it badly during the Culpepper years.  We did a horrible job marketing him, using him for future recruiting and overall riding his success.  His junior year UCF even forgot to turn in the insurance paperwork protecting him from an injury. (how poor was that)
