USF Track & Field Standout Chandra Brewer Advances To Shot Put Final At NCAA Championships

(Note: The shot put prelims began at 8:30 p.m. pacific time, 11:30 p.m. eastern time on June 9)

Sacramento, CA (June 10, 2005) – USF track and field standout Chandra Brewer (Bartow, FL) is well on her way to earning All-America honors for the third consecutive year in the shot put, and has proven to be a serious threat to win a National Championship in the event.

Brewer, the Bulls’ lone participant at the NCAA Championships being held at Sacramento State University, shattered the school record in the event with a toss of 55-5.75 inches in the preliminaries. She surpassed the old mark of 54-8 inches which she set earlier this season. In addition her throw is tied for the second best throw at the championships.

“Chandra threw extremely well,†said USF head track and field coach Greg Thiel. “We are just hoping that she can keep up her intensity and step up on Saturday.â€Â

Recording the top throw in the prelims was Brewer’s in-state rival Kimberli Bennett of Miami who recorded a distance of 56-7.25 inches. Michelle Carter of Texas equaled Brewer’s throw of 55-5.75 inches and shares second.

Should Brewer finish first in the shot put event she would be the first track athlete to win a national title since Jon Dennis won the 5,000 meters at the 1992 and 1993 NCAA Championships.

Brewer is scheduled to take part in the finals on Saturday, June 11 at 9:30 p.m. eastern time (6:30 p.m. pacific time).

Official Release:

USF’s Chandra Brewer Finishes Fifth In Shot Put At NCAA Championships; Earns All-America Honors

Sacramento, CA (June 11, 2005) – USF track and field standout Chandra Brewer (Bartow, FL) looked to become the first USF athlete to win a National Championship since Jon Dennis accomplished the feat, winning the NCAA title in the 5,000 meters at the 1992 and 1993 championships. Unfortunately, for Brewer, she came out on the short end a very competitive shot put event at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships held at Sacramento State University tonight.

After entering this week’s championships as the 10th ranked shot putter in the nation, Brewer finished fifth in the event with a throw of 54-4.50 inches, and earned All-America honors for the third consecutive year. That accomplishment makes her the first USF track and field athlete – man or woman – to earn All-America kudos three times in an individual outdoor event during her career.

“I am just so proud of Chandra,†said USF track and field coach Greg Thiel. “This is just a tremendous way for her to end what was an outstanding career. For her to finish fifth after coming in 10th is just a testament to her tireless work ethic. She has certainly set the bar for the ladies that will compete in the shot put at USF in the future.â€Â

Brewer advanced to the finals after recording a school record throw of 55-5.75 inches in the preliminaries later Thursday night. Her throw was tied for the second best throw of the prelims.

Instate rival Kimberli Bennett, of Miami, won the championship with a throw of 59-8.50 inches.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
