  1. I'm pretty sure recruits are aware that they are committing to a school not a coach. Especially in USFs case. For some current players coach Golesh is their third coach. Having said that, it's still a risk if you fire a coach who has established ties with a recruit right before signing day. The replacement coach might not be available immediately, it might spook the recruit, etc.
  2. It's a business...and he still had a job to do. If they fired him and missed out on recruits, that wouldn't have been smart. As long as they didn't lie to him and imply he was staying long term I'm okay with keeping him til after signing day.
  3. I'll be more of the negative Nancy here but I think people are being more generous about Trickett because the defensive side of the ball was just so historically bad by comparison (literally 131/131 in nation) My take regarding Trickett is you can look at the "points for" stats across all AAC teams and USF was still 3rd worst. Plus in more than 1 game our scoring came when the opponent was already up 25+ points. I mean, the first game of our season when we were healthiest we were down 38-7 at the half. I was at the game screaming for more shots down field but I swear they only took about 3 in that first half. And as some have already said, when games were on the line the offense could not deliver. Our final game of the season *someone* egregiously called for 3 plays in a row of rpo/running up middle when we needed a first down to win. Instead we punted to our 131st ranked defense after the 3 and out at the 50 yd line. (Spoiler we lost when they drove down field right after) Honestly I think the biggest source of goodwill for our fans came from our offensive game plan against Florida...which I admit was EXCELLENT. But still that was just one game. Here are some more points - it seriously took like 5 games to get our first passing TD - our original starting QB was posting numbers this year that were worse than he did his previous year at Baylor - a QB who was 4th string in the summer (and ended up starting the last 3 games due to many reasons) showed more poise, accuracy and explosiveness than any other QB we saw. So talent evaluation is a little sus.
  4. Spun another way... "After overseeing a porous run defense that was beat by a team with 0 completions, UCF's coaching staff decided on a bold plan to improve their defense by poaching from the 131st ranked unit."
  5. It's a bug when it involves nepotism. "My genes are so good my son is obviously the starter and I will proclaim it now" How many 5 star QBs will want to ride the bench while Deions son is there? His ego has already limited Colorado's QB ceiling to whatever his son is. The problem with ego is that when it's wrong it can't be reasoned with. Too much leads you to ignoring reality. And the reality is, he should be trying to recruit better players than what he has, for every position. And he should be trying to earn the respect of his players so that they trust his judgement when a depth chart is released. On day one he introduced a legit question that could fracture the locker room down the line: 'is he just playing favorites?' That's not a problem if he wins...but if he loses and the players don't trust his judgement then look out.
  6. You know what else is insane? Acting like a fanbase who has had 3 good years since 2012 should be happy to give away money to administrators who continually waste it on bad hires. I just don't like blaming the fans. Yes there are overreactions to the hire and in a different hiring cycle I'm sure more people would be excited about the guy who turned Tennessee into the #1 offense choosing USF. But the reactions are absolutely understandable considering the very malpractices you yourself mentioned. There is no "trust but verify" left for the fanbase...it's doubt and wait for proof. Winning is the only thing that will earn trust back.
  7. Huge ego with lack of humility. No question I'm glad he's not here. Sure he probably could have brought in good players but no current players could respect that. Can't imagine how he is in private if that's the public face.
  8. I chose my words carefully. He was a co-offensive coordinator at UCF recently. I was trying to highlight how funny it was to take the stance that this is not like Jeff Scott. That is absolutely a losing argument to make right now because at a high level they are similar on a few big bullet points that I listed. I understand it's not a 1-1 comparison but it is a fair one. Fans are once again being asked to 'have faith' when they were other options out there. (Young first time coordinators have a steeper hill to climb and less of a bench to go to when filling staff) USF could have had someone like Tom Herman who had less risks (HC experience, AAC recruiting experience, etc)..but instead FAU got him despite their team having played 0 games played in this conference, and despite starting their search much later than us. Sure hiring someone like Herman only makes the people that wanted a Head Coach happy in the short term and doesn't mean we automatically do better next year. But hiring an unknown also doesn't automatically make us better next year and in the short term it reeks of groundhog day triggering our PTSD. I don't think people should be throwing in the towel/cancelling season tickets but I absolutely understand why they are that frustrated. (But I think the sting will lessen over time)
  9. No, this is another person who was recently a co-offensive coordinator at a school with a good quarterback, who also has no head coaching experience and practically no ties to Florida. Look in any other hiring cycle this is a hire the fan base would be at least a little excited for. Getting someone associated with a number 1 offense is usually considered a "get". Just imagine if this were Alabama's OC we had hired, during a year they had the top scoring offense; how many people would be excited and feel USF was on the rebound since we stole one from P5 openings? The problem is, collectively as a fan base we saw how historically bad things can go with a first time head coach. It can be hard to assemble a staff if you've never done it before. And hardly any fan left has the patience for that 'learning on the job' stuff again. Maybe this guy doesn't have the problem and it's a moot point. But it's still a risk now compared to anyone with head coaching experience and success. And that is what most people wanted because it gave the best chance of a quick turnaround.
  10. In America, you get Head Coach experience. In Soviet Russia, Head Coach experiences you.
  11. Eh....he shouldn't have to be telling the parents he will make them good men. Parents should have done that already. I would want to hear "I'm going to run thru walls to win and bring you success. People will be telling stories of the games you played in"
  12. So is it taboo for a coach to say you want to help kids kick ass and win on the field? I keep seeing these type of speeches from USF coaches (Scott, DePrado, now this dude) where they all say "raising good men" is the highest calling of a coach. I'm not saying I want sociopaths on the field...but I don't think Tom Brady's pre Super Bowl speech with the Bucs was about how they all needed to be good men first and football athletes second.
  13. This is what I'm worried about the most. And *this* is the reason to be worried that the former is true. The only reason you don't have a coach right now is because he is coaching today. And while there are other teams playing today who are not coached by Deon/Chadwell...the fact is there hasn't been much 'smoke' linking others to USF. So naturally some of our minds wander to "are we effing this up the way we have been with all of our hires recently?" "Oh but it's actually good we haven't heard other rumors since the big names said no" you say, "Means no leaks in the department". Sorry but while that is normally true, these are not normal times. USF fans are at their most vulnerable right now, having gone through the worst few years in the team's existence and our players are entering the portal on a daily basis. SOMETHING REASSURING, TO PROVIDE HOPE, IS NEEDED FOR FANS AND PLAYERS. Otherwise the perception of an incompetent administration that can't win games and can't hire coaches with a month head start becomes reality.
  14. The music is stopping and the chairs are going away... If it's not Deion (I never had high expectations there) then it's pretty obvious we got passed by the ones we targeted right? Why else would we be waiting this long? All I know is Herman to FAU is stinging a lot right now since he did so well in the AAC before and will now be at our new "rival".
  15. But greatly increases our chances of being out-coached by Tom Herman next year
  16. I would have been okay with Larry Scott instead of Jeff Scott back in 2019. But right now I agree we can't get someone who *might* work out. We need the turnaround to start next year...this can't be another 'wait a few years while the coach who has never been at this level learns'.
  17. Let's not forget that UCF, down 1 score, threw to the end zone instead of playing for a field goal in it's last few seconds. Almost like their staff knows you have to try to win decisively. We would have played conservative and trotted out Shrader for a 50+ yarder. ::Cough UF game cough::
  18. We have 1 FBS win in 4 seasons; I'm not worried about consistent success, I'm worried about any success before we're too much of a joke for players and fans to care about. Now if you want a real answer to the problem of how to handle head coaches leaving and starting over, @puc86 had an idea about ditching the traditional head coach paradigm and making things more interchangeable. I can't do it justice but he could probably recap. If his idea is too bold, then find someone not named Michael Kelly to identify prospective coaches. Other NCAA teams have coaching turnover but they don't end up worst in the nation (both football & basketball)
  19. I'm still in a post loss funk because I don't think any announcement will get me excited. -Deon has the hype and "dream" of recruiting better players quickly and getting the spotlight for us. But I'm 150% sold on BB as the starter and wouldn't want to lose him for Deon's kid, who, as Brad mentioned would be gone with pops as soon as a good P5 came sniffing. Hell Prime might get an offer after accepting for us. - anyone else.. We have a terrible track record of finding a good hire and the transfer portal floodgates will probably open
  20. Someone got paid money to let the 131st ranked defense put the game on their shoulders. Nothing more needs to be said to explain why it's their fault.
  21. If anyone wants to part with a parking pass for tonight's UCF game, I'll gladly take one to save a few buckaroos. Thanks.
