Hope the coaches are recruiting heavily
tamiamibull05 replied to IncrediBULL's topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Rivals and Scout are more for fans, not coaching staffs. Many college football programs pay several thousand dollars to professional recruiting services that they use in addition to their own recruiting analyses. USF had LRS for a few years (in addition to others) but I'm not sure who they have now. They're much more likely to go by the ratings of those services than they are from Rivals and Scout. Now, some of the ratings can be very similar and it seems as though (to the fans) that the coaching staff is going after players based on their star ratings from the fan sites. They're really not. That said, Rivals and Scout are useful to coaching staffs in that they oftentimes have good "extra" media-related information on prospects that can be used to help in the recruitment process. -

Stu Holt is going to be the Director of Player Personnel, so it's doubtful we're going to have a tight-ends coach. Trae Hackett was also hired from WKU to be the Assistant Director of Football Operations under Sharrod Everett. -
Mike, thank you for this post. Nucc, Rachel and Franks were long-time USF Bulls who really helped build our program out of three little ol' trailers (Franks since '04). I knew and worked with all three and they were first-class professionals and great people as well. I was hoping CWT wouldn't let them go (especially since we'd be losing all of their recruiting connections...which everyone seems to be complaining about with the new hires...), but I'm sure they'll land on their feet pretty soon. Thanks and good luck to them!

---------------------------------------- Stu Holt has been hired on the offensive side (or ST), and Ray Woodie on the defensive side. Exact duties for either have not yet been identified. I think that leaves one more on offense, two for defense. There should be a total of nine. The recruiting coordinator position is an office position that does not go on the field. Ah yes, good call on Holt and he probably will be coaching tight-ends. Recruiting coordinator can be, and usually is, an on-field assistant coach though. For example, Carl Franks was running backs coach and recruiting coordinator between 2004 and 2007. It's actually preferred that one of the assistant coaches is a recruiting coordinator because only nine assistant coaches can have direct contact with recruits. However, I believe the rules are about to change in terms of coaches' contact with recruits (link: http://highschoolsportsblog.dallasnews.com/2013/01/report-ncaa-board-to-vote-on-legislation-that-could-drastically-alter-college-football-coaches-access-to-recruits.html/). -
The luster has already worn off

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His raiders defense was STACKED. It should have been a number 1 defense. HoF DB Rod Woodson, Bill Romanowski (solid veteran LB), Charles Woodson (multi Pro Bowls), and Trace Armstrong (highest sacks in NFL 2000, multiple pro bowls). And if you actually watched the Bucs Raiders Super Bowl, the Bucs offense at one point scored 34 unanswered points. Gruden had nothing to do with the defense so it wasn't like they knew the defensive plays. The Bucs offense was ranked 18th. You're the one that's wrong dude. He only has a decent defense when its stacked with super stars and pro bowl players. When he doesn't, his defenses are middle of the pack...at best. Just to clarify a few things... I remember Trace Armstrong when he played for the Dolphins until 2000 (the team he led the league in sacks with, not the Raiders). He got injured not long after he joined the Raiders and was never the same thereafter. He was in his mid- to late-30s by that time. Bill Romanowski was in his late 30s by the time he got to the Raiders and was WAY over his prime. Rod Woodson was still solid and got to the pro bowl one of those years but he was also in his late 30s and not the same player he once was. Charles Woodson was really the only player who was in his prime and a consistent pro bowler during Bresnahan's tenure. It seems to be that Bresnahan had an old, veteran group and still managed to hold it together. Also, the assertion that Gruden knew nothing of his former team's defense is preposterous. -

Most staffs have 8-9 assistant coaches. Of course, one coach will pickup recruiting coordinator duties and another will pickup special teams duties. Here's how our staff rounds out thus far: Offense Offensive Coordinator-Walt Wells Quarterbacks-Nick Sheridan Running Backs- Wide Receivers- Tight Ends- Offensive Line-Walt Wells Two vacancies, as Larry Scott will likely take tight ends or running backs. Defense Defensive Coordinator-Chuck Bresnahan Defensive Line- Linebackers- Secondary- One vacancy, perhaps two if the defensive line or secondary is split up. My guess is Bresnahan will pick up linebackers and Woodie will pickup either defensive ends or the whole defensive line. Most likely, we're looking for a secondary coach and an interior defensive line coach. -
On the surface, I'd agree that this could be construed as unprofessional. However, there may have been some experiences Weiner encountered during his small amount of time on staff that caused him to change his mind. There could've been a difference in coaching philosophies, being unimpressed with how the athletic department operates, salary and benefits dispute, etc. I think there's more to the "I'm going back to my players" excuse. Of course, I may be wrong and we'll never really know for sure. Regardless of how you feel about this situation, for the sake of our future recruiting efforts with Plant High School, I think we should refrain from criticizing Weiner too much. This forum is public and who knows who is viewing this information (i.e., Weiner himself, Plant players, Plant boosters). We don't want to turn an ally into an enemy.

over rated like his big mouth brother I agree. Both are classless hacks. Their father (Buddy) was classless too, but at least he was a great defensive coach.

I just saw that Larry Antonnucci is no longer on the coaching staff site, so I'm guessing he got the boot too. I know Taggert was bringing in Sharrod Everett who held the same position at WKU but figured Antonucci would be retained in some way. Apparently not. Larry Scott is the only survivor. -

How's that shady? It gave them time to look for another job, while being paid. It's shady because of the way it's presented to the staffers who remain. They're given the impression that they'll be retained so they bust their asses for a month or two to no avail. It's tantamount to a "carrot-on-a-stick" type of deal. If you want to get rid of previous staff, fine, but just do it right away and bring in your own people. A fast "no" is much better than a slow "maybe". What makes you think they were given the impression they would be retained? Have you been told this by the staff in question? Yeah, I know some of them. -

It's a business...these guys know that. Wish them the best, but we need a new attitude and no voices saying "this is how we used to do it" I'm betting we hear some news today on addtional staff members Sorry, but it's too easy for people to say "It's just a business". Everyone says that until it happens to them. Also, there's two guys still there (Larry Scott and Larry Antonucci) who can say "this is how we used to do it". -

That's a shame about Franks and Rachel. I knew both and they were real good guys. I do think it's a little shady that CWT kept them on for supporting duties for a month and then let them go. I saw that CWT named Sharrod Everett the DFO...does that mean Larry Antonucci has been fired too? -

Head coaches are going to bring in assistant coaches they've either coached with before or have some sort-of connection to. This happens 90% of the time when coaches go to another school: They bring at least half of their previous staff and hire coaches they're familiar with from the outside. Coaching is all about connections. You can go on and on and on about how Shannon or Weinke or any others could be a perfect fit for our program, but if CWT doesn't know them well, the likelihood of them coming here is greatly diminished. Of course, there are exceptions, but most of the time coaches bring in people they know. -
Your 5 favorite all-time Bulls athlete
tamiamibull05 replied to a topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
I really can't narrow it to five, here's 10: 1. Kawika Mitchell (a great success story; i played with Kawika at Lake Howell HS) 2. Andre Hall (not sure he could've started over Ben Williams though ) 3. Stephen Nicholas (phenomenal player and great person) 4. George Selvie (same as Nicholas) 5. Marquel Blackwell (the first Bulls football superstar) 6. Chucky Atkins (a USF classic) 7. Mike Jenkins (no one at USF has ever locked down receivers like him) 8. Anthony Henry (great in college and in the NFL) 9. JR Reed (one of the toughest Bulls ever) 10. Reggie Kohn (was a year ahead of me at Lake Howell) -

I'm pretty sure you'd be on the top five tight-ends list, Feld. -
Don't really agree with the digging up the field stuff and the like...it's really low class. I was pissed off as it is at how the Eric Foster-led Rutgers team denigrated our locker room 2 seasons ago.

Defensive Line coach leaves for Wisconsin
tamiamibull05 replied to a topic in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
I wonder if CJL will have DE coach Rachel also take over the DT and pay him more rather than going out and getting a defensive line coach. Rachel is an excellent coach and also a phenomenal recruiter. Doing that could open up a vacancy to hire a full-time special teams coach rather than have the special teams broken up among the coaching staff and overseen by CJL. However, I doubt that will happen. Losing Lane is really bad b/c he recruited more schools in Florida (south Florida and Tampa) than all other coaches on the staff. For recruiting purposes, the next two hires will be huge (barring another coach leaving). -
Does anybody know or have information on the summer football camps for USF? I know the Sling and Shoot Camp is in mid-July but wasn't sure about the regular football camp. I tried to find it on the athletics page, but naturally, nothing was there.

Good call, Joe. Wasn't sure if he was alumni or faculty.
