  1. This class is filling needs with quality players USF Adds Chamberlain WR, Panama City Bay OL By BRETT McMURPHY Published: Jan 26, 2006 Related Links: WFLA Report From Charlotte Meineke Car Care Bowl Photos Meineke Car Care Bowl Stats Bulls Report - Brett McMurphy Blog USF Football: Roster | Results | Statistics Purchase USF Football Tickets ADVERTISEMENT More from this channel: Search our archives: Type keyword(s) 30 days6 months2005200420032002200120001999199819971996199519941993199219911990All Past 7 days most viewed | Tribune archive from 1990 TAMPA - Chamberlain wide receiver Edner Alcin, one of the state's fastest recruits, and Panama City Bay offensive lineman Jeremiah Warren verbally committed to the University of South Florida. Alcin (6-1, 177) had the second fastest 40-yard dash (4.44) among the wide receivers at the Tallahassee Nike training camp in May. He also played in the FACA North-South all-star game. "He's going to be great," Chamberlain coach Billy Turner said. "He's one of the fastest kids in the state. He can really run and catch a football." A Class 3A all-state honorable mention defensive lineman, Warren (6-3, 320) will be moved to guard or center at USF. "He has a tremendous wingspan, real long arms," Bay coach Mike Healy said. "He's a tough guy. He has a chance to be an outstanding offensive lineman." Warren was recruited by UCF, Memphis, Southern Miss and Ole Miss. Warren also is wrestling as a heavyweight for Bay (he's undefeated) and also throws the shot put and discus on the track team. "USF paid so much attention to him, the coaches visited all the time," Healy said. "They seemed to really want him bad and it showed up. He felt like they really wanted him. He's not just another body."
  2. I think the negativism about the basketball team is pointless. Sure we won't have many wins at the end of the season. Sports at the amateur level is not just about winning. Its about school support and loyalty. Clearly USF is trying to build a stronger basketball program and from everything anyone has seen, we are moving in the right direction. I truly believe if we were in the Big East when Seth was here our program would not have declined. Mac is moving in the right direction and he and the players have earned our respect and support by their efforts alone.
  3. At least we dance toe to toe with those who go to the big dance. Our turn is coming soon.
  4. This puts the quality of our BB team in perspective. (with the exeption of BC and FIU which defy explanation). We barely lose to Georgetown who beat Duke and to St. Johns who beat Pitt. I've said all along, our team is good. It is just not deep due to injuries. Regardless of our record we are competing well in the BE. The record will come now that a foundation is being set.
  5. Quality is relative. If they were CUSA still we'd be near the top. We are in the Big East and we will look back and see this was the best for USF and its players. Fact is, we are competing in the Big East, not just playing. Each team we play must play well to beat us.
  6. Only one thing I disagree with Paisa. There is much to expect and the Bulls are delivering: Heart and improved play with each game. It's not like we have bad players. Our players are very good. They are just playing against other very good or better teams with more depth.
  7. As we near the end of recruiting for this year I wonder if prospects check out this board. If so it might not be a bad idea to list some special times that happened this football season and how it relates to the future of Bulls football. There were clearly two times for me and both occurred after the game. The first was when JL came across the field after our victory over Louisville to thank the fans. Huge step for us. The second was after the Car Care Bowl as the players were leaving the field. Andre stopped, beat on his heart and pointed to the fans who were cheering one of the best persons ever to put on a Bulls uniform. Both were pretty emotinal. There were plenty of other highs but those two stand out.
  8. The second part of the article was equally optimistic! HOWARD BACK HOME: Watching the men's basketball team's 50-47 loss at Georgetown on Tuesday was especially tough for freshman PG Chris Howard, who is out all season with a torn ACL. Howard grew up in Fort Washington, Md., about 15 minutes from Washington, D.C. "This was one of the games I had circled on the calendar," said Howard, who had about 20 family members and friends at the MCI Center. "I knew the fans would be tough on me, but I wanted to be able to play in front of my mom." Howard - and the Bulls - got some good news before Tuesday's game. For the first time since his injury, Howard was allowed to jog. Howard said his rehabilitation is going well and he'll be ready to play next season.
  9. Okay, so the wins aren't here but the players are. We have very good players who play in an outstanding conference. If we were at full strength we would easily be at .500 now. Give the team and coaches some credit (Except for the Cookman game).
  10. This is a diamond in the rough. A year or two of training and we'll have two or three years of an outstanding lineman who will play Sundays.
  11. PJ is a great athlete and a true team player. He would have no problem skill wise at TE. He ran a sort of wishbone offense in Miramar and he's already proven himself as a tough runner. Plus, because of his heart he will block with the best of them. The bonus is having a trick play up our sleeve with him in the line up.
  12. As long as the team maintains its intensity, and it will, CD will get up to speed and the three point losses will become three point wins.
  13. We steal one from FSU (Harris) and one from Alabama (Marshall): I'd say we're movin' on up!
  14. smazza isn't an idiot. I think he truly loves USF. He just has to get rid of those "negative waves".
  15. All four star guys want to start right away. They will wait to see which schools give them that op. We will get some late like we did with Carlton Hill. Hill's success in the coming years will cement our ability to grab a bunch of four star athletes.
  16. 1. Where were you were born in? NY, NY 2. What city & state you went to elementry school in? Miami, FL 3. What state you went to middle school/Jr. High in? Miami 4. What state you went to high school school in? Miami 5. What state do you work in or plan to work in when you finish your degree? FL
  17. Good for Steve! Good for us! Good for the Big East! Defensive anchor expected to return By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer Published January 11, 2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAMPA - He hasn't officially announced his plans, but all signs point to Bulls junior linebacker Stephen Nicholas holding off on the NFL draft and returning for his senior year. Like running back Andre Hall last year, Nicholas submitted his name to the NFL's advisory council for underclassmen to get a better sense of where he might be selected in the April draft. And like Hall, Nicholas was told he likely wouldn't be taken on the first day. Based on that response, a very happy coach Jim Leavitt said Nicholas is leaning toward returning for his final season, a major boost for what could be USF's best defense ever. Nicholas' father, Lebon, said last week that his son was going to enter the draft if he was projected to be taken in the first or second round and that it would be difficult to leave school if he were going any lower. Nicholas, who will graduate this spring with a degree in communications, earned second-team All-Big East honors after finishing second on the Bulls with 89 tackles. He had 91/2 tackles for a loss and forced two fumbles as USF's starting weakside linebacker.
  18. The team has proved they can play with anyone. Getting victories in our first year in the Big East is second to showing we can compete. The victories will come. The SEC is on the way down and we will benefit. We already have. In a few years we will look at this team with nothing but respect and gratitude.
  19. First of all, great to hear a positive from Smazza. Second, USFSam has a story similar to my son's. I graduated UF and we always assumed my son would follow. In spite of his 1530 SAT, UF didn't like his GPA (3.3) and said go somehwhere else. USF saw a diamond in the rough and accepted him into their honors college. UCF did the same but my son chose the Bulls. Best thing that could ever have happened. He loves it and is doing well. I easily dropped my allegience to UF and traveled from Melbourne to make every home football game and had a great time in Charlotte. What happened to USFSam is what happens to practically all who become a Bull. Not only are athletics on the rise; all aspects of the University are. Go Bulls!
  20. Not sure it would have been an improvement. UM offense got by on talent alone in recent years and most of it was wasted.
  21. He just recruited another excellent player (transferred from Arizona). He is snake bit this year and still competitive in the Big East. He deserves our support and patience!
  22. Face it. We had a much better year than most expected. The only reason we are frustrated is that we discovered we are better than we thought. True, better coaching decisions could have been made but you can't blame JL. He got us pretty darn far. Some of his coaches must either improve or hit the road. I don't get why we showed so much imagination vs UL and then it basically stopped. UM just let go of some excellent coaches. The guy who should have left was Coker. We should consider some of those guys. UM's loss could be our gain.
  23. Yeah losing sucked but it was great to be a Bull! Our fans were great and the players fully appreicated us. The best part was when Andre was leaving the field and the fans stayed and acknowledged all he had done for USF. He raised his helmet high and beat his chest showing in an emotional display of gratitude. That alone made the trip worthwhile. This is only the beginning and overall, not a bad start! Go Bulls!
  24. Like Coach has said, C4 and the other Freshman are more like Sophomores. They've had a year experience and are way more ready to play now than the beginning of the season. C4 will contribute but PJ would have much better stats and we'd probably have a couple more wins with fewer dropped passes and penalties. I've just gotten over third and goal from the one becoming fourth and six at U Conn.
  25. Paramedic and firefighter soon to be retired! More time to catch Bulls games where my son is a soph.
