you're forgetting the other side of the equation.
obviously ideally we would have a top 5 offense and a top 5 defense that blows out every opponent we meet.
that being said, there is less margin for error if you can't stop your opponent either.
the rays have had success because their defense and pitching is better than most teams. they have never had a very good offense.
I don't know for sure but i bet they haven't been in top 10 offenses at all during their run.
certain offenses put a lot of pressure on their defense . west virginia, baylor, etc. TOP may not correlate to winning but I bet it can have a profound effect on your defense. when they spend a good deal of time on the field they tend to wear down.
when you get a lead and can't kill the clock then you are at a disadvantage.when you go 3 and out quickly and wear down your defense it's easier for your opponent to score.
A good offense can overcome a below average defense. You just have to win games 49-42 in a shoot out. It doesn't work as well the other way around.
actually it does work just as well the other way around.
Our D gave up 7 points to MSU and we lost. 14 to FAU. How good does the defense have to be to overcome our inept offense? Are they going to have to hold opponents to two field goals so we can win 10-6?
Yet you fail to see how MSU's good D overcame their inept O.
Their O had a 50% completion rate for 3.5 yards/completions for a total passing of 94 yards. Their total was 265. They turned the ball over twice, Their 3rd down efficiency was 4-14.
Their D scored 14 of the 21pts
Take away the 14 points and their offense still did just enough to win the game. Basically one good TD drive to our none. I get that defense can win you some games, but I would like our chances better if we were scoring some points.
Your also failing to include the average starting field position caused by their D. The number of tipped balls they caused, their rush to our QB, stuffing the line, causing turn overs...etc...etc.
MSU's touchdown drive was after a horrific 15 yard punt that put MSU on USF's 33 yard line.
