  1. " Crap, SF's whole offense is one big trick play!" I hate the spread. Except when it works. For us.
  2. It WAS risky. Is Amarri actively given options on that play? For example, if they didn't have anyone in the flats (or they all overpursued), would his first read be just to run for the first? If that's the case, it's not a whole lot different from calling a normal toss if he tucks it. Also, UNC is bad about overpursuit...a great team to use misdirections and reverses on. I've been all over Rod. I'm not sold on him yet. But I'll admit he called a good game today. More importantly, we weren't mired in 800000000000 penalties, and that MATTERED ALOT. Some of UNC's worst plays came following a penalty. USF kept it pretty disciplined today and I was impressed by that. He definitely made me hate him less. I do, after all, like people who actually improve at a noticable rate over time.
  3. Not necessarily. I don't know what they tell our LB's to do (nor would I criticize it, because technical and positional scheming to fit our D is just WEEEEEEEEEE bit above my level...if it wasn't i'd coach), but sometimes if a backer is given a man coverage assignment, and his guy stays in to block, he goes in. He could also spy the QB (not a bad idea vs the UNC guy) or jump one of those inside routes that he believes is coming (I've seen Derrick Brooks do this for the Bucs, it was a few years ago and he was manned on a running back, but picked off a WR slant iirc). Anyway, 5 sacks isn't exactly piss poor. We did OK this game. I'd have liked to see less big plays given up, but it's hard to argue with a 17 point road win. Remember, every win counts.
  4. Blitzes are schemed against on film. A team having an idea of which one is coming can easily be the difference between a 50+ yard play and a sack. Besides, you don't have to blitz if you can get enough pressure without it. No matter what, assignment football is best. If you can't play the players in assignments, you pull off on the exotic calls. A good example is the new york giants, who lost a game this season while blitzing a lot, simplified their scheme, and beat the redskins the next week 19-3 with minimal blitzes. I'd actually like the giants, redskins, and cowboys to lose as much as possible though. I'd wonder more about the missed tackles, but it was a good game overall. We got a road win, and more than covered the spread to boot.
  5. Man, we haven't had golden in our name since we dropped the golden brahmans. Ridiculous.
  6. >5 ypc from a HB makes our running game go. He had some yards today, and not surprisingly our offense had its points. Maybe the new kicker is the answer to our kicking game. If these factors come together for us we'll be a much improved team for the 2nd half of 2006. A bowl is looking pretty likely now.
  7. Good, now you finally realize why USC has been overrated. Glad you are finally catching on, Smazz. ;D Hate to be a buzzkill, because I usually disagree with Smazza, but USC deserves #4 right now. They have a harder schedule than either UL or WVU based on the rankings of the teams they play (or even W-L, or any method I can think of) and they're undefeated. No way in hell are they ahead of UF or Michigan in my book right now, but if UF loses and USC doesn't USC deserves to go. Obviously, either OSU or Michigan WILL lose, so UF winning out will make it. If they don't, then USC gets the call. If USC doesnt get through the pac 10 (and im not so certain they will), then its going to be UL or WVU most likely to get that 2nd spot. I'm ignoring strange but possible scenarios, like iowa beating michigan and michigan beating ohio state, etc. for the time being. That would just complicate the discussion further.
  8. Too early. You can' t evaluate the quality of QB's based on what we've seen so far. Especially in Tebow's case, since he's used as a changeup. Also, we have no idea how either QB will evolve as passers, so we're going to have to sit tight and find out. If somebody made this trade offer for a fantasy team, I'd turn it down (unless they also offered wynn and some key defensive players too. People do stupid crap in fantasy leagues.)
  9. Ploy! Make the coach prepare for two different QBs! Hahahahahahaha.
  10. As long as our players aren't thinking this way, it's all good. Hoping to see an impact from the players we have returning.
  11. Apparently TO has never been on one of "your teams" .
  12. Bad as the officiating is, when it goes on this long it's very likely to be the fault of USF play. Maybe 2 of those calls were bad. Maybe 3 even. That still doesn't account for the others, which in the past have costed us games.
  13. Im glad we dont play UM or FSU this year both of those teams would still give us L's. What records say and what kind of athletes you have on the field can be decieving. The best team athletically we've seen is rugters which isnt saying much. UL and WVU will be the fist teams we play with elite talent like UM and FSU, lets not get carried away here. You must mean that "elite level" talent in louisville that got wrecked last year in our stadium. WVU beat us, but it didn't look like they beat us on talent. They beat us on execution. Missed tackles and blown assignments hurt the D, and we all know what hurt us on offense. The coaches didn't pin that loss on talent, and neither should fans. WVU was the better team not because of talent, but because they OUTPLAYED us. Much like we outplayed louisville. Good teams show up with that caliper play every week. You say not to look at schools based on records. Instead, your logic points towards picking places being good merely because of their name. News flash: 6-6 nebraska a few years ago wasn't really that good. These miami and fsu teams are better than that, but if they finish with 4+ losses, they aren't that good either. Good teams are consistent. Reality is somewhere between the two. Saying Miami or FSU are sure L's for USF this year is ignorant. Those teams look awful compared to what they usually field, especially on offense. I'm not sure weatherford or wright could even throw our corners out of how we were playing tonight (play corners off allowing more safety support and force the offense to make sustained drives via intermediate passing). Neither are the premier QB's they were hyped to be yet. I hold judgment for now. How teams do across a season start to finish is what matters.
  14. If we're leaving him at OC, we need to hope the QB coach can handle that position. Rod can't. We also need someone specifically to step up and stop the 8000000 stupid penalties/game. Playcalling, at least, looks better. The offensive plays are executed a bit better too, although I'm curious what we can do with a starting-caliper tailback in.
  15. Ponton is clearly better. Or was, based on last year. You might want to see williams in first. Ponton will be rusty. Look at what happened to buckhalter of the philadelphia eagles after not playing for a long time. Granted, pontons only been out half a season, not the better part of 2. Ponton will split more time in his first couple of games back than the last couple most likely. We could always start both in a 2 back set lol. Seriously though, I think ponton should get more carries and williams should give him rest. I bet williams would look pretty good 2nd half with about 25% or less of the carries. Fresh legs mean a lot. Ponton will have to get more of the carries than 25% though, unless we are going to continue playing Grothe like we have 4 more grothes on the sideline.
  16. We'll either be 5-3 or 6-2, can't be 5-2 for Pitt. Hurricane delay :-X!
  17. Very. That type of error should be cracked down on HARD. I don't care if it's confusing ULL and ULM of the sun belt, it shouldn't happen. These guys are professionals. They should try harder to show that fact.
  18. Having them back will help. We don't need people who go around breaking laws. Hopefully, they've cleaned up and are ready to contribute to the team again. Ponton and Julmiste in particular should help us a lot. We might be a very different team in a hurry with a solid rushing HALFBACK.
  19. That annoyed me too. What if Grothe really was hurt to the point of not playing for a few weeks, do people WANT pat to do badly? Ridiculous. Booing an individual play or playcall I could understand. Tough love or whatever. Booing a player who is forced in due to injury? No thanks. I do wish we put someone else in for garbage time. PJ is going to graduate, and he has plenty of experience in real games already. We need to build up the newer guys at the end, perhaps gregory or even severino. PJ is our backup this year already. We need to groom one for future years.
  20. This is a big concern I have. There is no reason for playing so far off the line of scrimmage. Any team can then run a WR screen and pick up a good deal of yards. Jenkins is fast enough to be able to play up much closer than he does. The poor tacklong from this group is also a concern. I thought ROberts had a very nice game. He could have had a couple of more picks, one that would have been an easy pick 6. Criticize all you want, but the only reason they moved the ball was penalties. Jenkins didn't pass interfere because he was playing off. I didn't see trae williams get called multiple times. Playing corners off isnt too bad in this situation. We were up against a bad QB who 1) might not make the short pass read or audible at all, 2) Might not put enough zip or place it well, and 3) needed a deep ball to catch up for a good portion of the game. We had that game if we didn't give up big garbage TD catches. UConn isn't a team that can sustain a drive. I'll be worried if our corners ALWAYS play off vs brohm (once in a while is ok), but vs this guy there was no reason not to. Take away the run, play off, and make the QB repeatedly make good reads. He couldn't do it. Game over for their O.
  21. Well, I know too many people that left tampa to go to the UF game. From that standpoint, I'd rather see more fans cheering on the bulls. I for one was wearing green and gold, and I hate UF. This was refreshing. We got to see a blowout. I like it.
  22. #1 USF #1 Philadelphia Eagles #2 UM (Went there first) #3 Opponents of schools or teams I outright dislike, including UCF, UF, FSU, Ohio State, Dallas Cowboys, Giants, and Redskins to name the bulk. #4 Power teams that use power running/don't rely on the spread. I wish USF didn't. It makes football seem too much like basketball for me. In the end though, execution beats anything.
  23. The guy barely gets 100 yards against one of the worst run defenses in the country, and you want him to start over Ponton? Did anyone happen to watch the first five games? I'll be happy if Williams can be a not terrible second string RB over the second half of the season. He can catch passes and block. Maybe he can safely give Ricky a breather once in a while. Solid logic. I'm inclined to agree with you.
  24. Offensive penalties are likely Rod's fault. It seems, however, that he has learned a little bit from past mistakes. I still don't think this guy is OC material yet. The fact that he improved a little bit from last year to this year is encouraging though.
  25. I won't drink @ games, and I stay the hell away from trouble. I fear what I would do if I were complying with a police officers orders and I got roughed up. Just have to stay away. Some people, even public officials, don't do their jobs correctly. It's an unfortunate fact. Hopefully, games get people who do their jobs correctly, be it officiating, policing, or the scoreboard .
