USF Adds 3 More From State

By BRETT McMURPHY

Published: Jan 28, 2005

TAMPA - South Florida received three more verbal commitments Thursday, including two from a pair of first-team all-state players.

Orlando Edgewater defensive back Tyller Roberts and Blountstown wide receiver Ishmael Grant, who were Class 6A and 1A all-state selections, respectively, and Miami Norland defensive end Gary Watts increased USF's commitments to 21.

Roberts (6-foot-0, 190 pounds) chose USF over N.C. State and canceled visits to Ole Miss and Florida, Edgewater coach Bill Gierke said.

``He's the kind of kid, once he decided it was right for him, that was enough,'' Gierke said. ``He saw something there he liked a lot. South Florida was a natural fit for him.''

Roberts started four seasons at Edgewater and played cornerback, safety and wide receiver.

``He's strong as a bull and runs like the wind,'' Gierke said.

Grant (6-2, 175) considered Auburn, Troy and Georgia Southern before picking USF.

``His potential is tremendous,'' Blountstown coach Bobby Johns said. ``He needs to get bigger and stronger, but he has the tools you can't teach - he has great speed and great hands.''

Johns said Grant must improve his GPA and test scores to meet college entrance requirements.

Watts (6-3, 215) also was recruited by North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. He was rated the state's 96th best player by Rivals.com.

Ismael isn't rated by rivals... 0 stars, 0 pts... unless they are getting ready to rate him.  He just showed up on our wide receiver list, but he isn't in a category yet...  very strange looking.

notice he is above everything... must be in the process of being rated.

I read there is little chance he qualifies. He is most likely a sign and place, similar to Kearse last year. Hope that Grant proves them wrong.

If he does somehow qualify, he can really help out or return game.

He's still at a juco or CC... i believe he still plans to come to USF, but he has another year to go.
