Genshaft, husband to donate $1 million to USF

TAMPA — University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft and her husband announced Friday they will donate $1 million to the school for study abroad scholarships.

With additional funds from the state, the donation will create a $1.75 million endowment for the scholarships over the next five years.

The scholarships would apply to a variety of programs, from winter-break projects in the Dominican Republic to semesters abroad in Spain.

"We strongly believe that international travel is an essential part of a student's education," Genshaft told an audience at USF Friday morning. "Increasingly, employers tell us that they want to hire graduates that are prepared to work in the global marketplace ... It is our duty to prepare students to be competitive and successful in the globalized future."

Genshaft's husband, Steven Greenbaum, said the scholarships will aim to aid students who otherwise would not be able to study abroad because of the cost.

Amanda Maurer, director of the USF education abroad, said the donation comes at a critical time for her department. The fund for current study abroad scholarships at USF is less than $20,000, she said.
