Colleges chasing locals for football

By BRIAN MCLAUGHLIN

DAYTONA BEACH -- The college football recruiting season is heating up. The Volusia-Flagler area had three players verbally commit to play at Division I-A or I-AA football schools this weekend, as the countdown to signing day continues.

National signing day is on Feb. 2, and until then, all commitments are non-binding.

Flagler Palm Coast's Marshwan Gilyard committed to Cincinnati this weekend, while DeLand's Fred McCaskill decided he will play at Bethune-Cookman next year. Mainland's Brent Davis committed to South Carolina on Sunday night -- but is now rethinking that decision after talking to Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday morning.

Davis thought Florida had lost interest in recent weeks, and had narrowed his decision to either N.C. State or South Carolina, but after Meyer called, he's back in a state of confusion. It was a childhood dream of his to play for the Gators, and Meyer asked him to visit Gainesville the weekend of Jan. 28.

"With UF coming on, it was like whoa, slam on the brakes," said Davis, who had N.C. State coach Chuck Amato at his house Monday for an in-home visit. "I feel like I need to be sure about what I'm doing. It's something that I have to live with. They are all good schools, and I've been praying a lot about it."

Meanwhile, Davis' teammate Jonathan Garner will announce today whether he'll sign with Georgia Tech, which he visited this past weekend, or Louisville.

"It's come down to how good their programs are doing, and how many quarterbacks are at each school," said Garner, who had also been looking at Ole Miss, South Carolina and Memphis.

In other recruiting news:

· Flagler Palm Coast receiver Dale Galvin has already committed to Middle Tennessee, while defensive back Chris Robinson just returned from an official visit to Indiana University, but is a heavy lean to South Florida at this point. This will be FPC's largest class of I-A signees in school history.

"They've had a big impact in bringing our program into respectability," FPC coach Steve Allen said. "They can make me more proud if four years from now they bring back the piece of paper (diploma)."

· DeLand kicker/punter Halley Ferrell is finding out how tough it is to secure a I-A scholarship offer as a kicking specialist -- even when you're clearly talented enough. Florida State assistant coach Billy Sexton wants Ferrell to come to Tallahassee as a preferred walk-on, and said that if he wins one of the kicking jobs, he'll get a scholarship. Central Florida had a similar offer on the table.

Meanwhile, I-AA teams like Youngstown State, Tennessee State and Western Kentucky have offered scholarships.

· At Spruce Creek, a trio of departing seniors -- linebacker Ian Lundy, running back Jonate Govan and defensive lineman Tony Adams -- is attracting a lot of I-AA interest.

All three have visited Southern Illinois already, while schools such as Coastal Carolina and Alabama A&M like all three. Lundy also has drawn serious interest from I-A Miami of Ohio, which will be down to meet with him this week.

Insiders lists Robinson:

Robinson transferred to FPC from Crescent City in the off-season and quickly showed why he is a Division I prospect, despite the fact he played the majority of the season with his right hand in a cast. He registered 50 tackles and four sacks, caused five fumbles and recovered three and broke up 10 passes in seven games.

Something is odd here.....it appears he moved from TE and DE at Crescent City to DB at FPC.  Insiders lists him as a 6'4" 215 TE/DE prior to his senior season but FPC played him at DB.  6'4" is one tall DB.  I wonder if either is height is off or he really played a different position at FPC?

I posted the wrong link to the last quote. Here is THAT article:

5 Bulldogs earn top accolades

By ANDREW MIKULA

PALM COAST -- Five members of Flagler Palm Coast's 2004 football team recently were tapped for first-team honors on The News-Journal's All-Area high school team selected by the newspaper's sports staff.

Of the five, senior running back Marshwan Gilyard made the team for the second year in a row. The others on the first team include offensive tackle Andrew Rosenthal, middle linebacker Allen Fennell, strong safety Chris Robinson and two-way threat Matt Spath. All are seniors.

Just missing the first-team cut team was senior wide receiver Dale Galvin, who made the second team. FPC's honorable mention laureates included senior halfback Matt Davis, junior quarterback Tory Thompson and junior defensive lineman Marlon Moore.

The number of first team selections for the 8-3 Bulldogs represents one of the largest numbers ever chosen from the school. Only Mainland had more with eight selections, while Spruce Creek matched FPC's total with five. All three teams were in the same district (District 3-5A) and each made the state playoffs for the second straight season.

Gilyard missed half the 2004 season to an elbow injury, but still racked up 861 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. In his career, which spanned all or part of three seasons, the elusive running back gained 2,572 yards and scored 34 touchdowns.

When the Bulldogs needed stability on the offensive line this past year, Rosenthal, the only returning starter from 2003, turned out to be a rock. Consistently grading out highly game after game, the senior co-captain stayed injury free and was a major reason why FPC enjoyed running success with Gilyard, and Davis.

On the defensive side, Fennell finished his third varsity season as the school's all-time leader in tackles with more than 225. Fennell's aggressive nose for the football and his relentless pursuit were showcased in the post-season, too, when he won East Team defensive player of the game honors at the Funcoast All-Star Football Classic.

Another three-year starter, Spath almost never left the field and proved an impact player. On offense he caught only nine passes but six went for touchdowns as he accumulated 319 receiving yards. Defensively Spath made 48 tackles, had one interception and broke up seven passes.

The Bulldogs got solid production from Galvin, a big-play wide receiver who caught 21 passes for 410 yards and five touchdowns, all at less than 100 percent because of a nagging knee problem.

An Orlando Sentinel article in the preseason says he is even bigger:

... Flagler Palm Coast (7-5) also made the playoffs and has gained an impact transfer, Chris Robinson (6-4/230, Sr.), from Crescent City.

I guess that's why Sunshine refers to him as "Stud"!  ;D

No. 3, 5A DAYTONA BEACH MAINLAND (6-1) at FLAGLER PALM COAST (7-1) - The defending state champ Bucs have won 28 consecutive district games, but this road trip is one of the stiffer challenges in that stretch. FPC got star tailback Marshawn Gilyard and stud safety Chris Robinson back from injury last week.

defensive back Chris Robinson just returned from an official visit to Indiana University, but is a heavy lean to South Florida at this point.

Maybe it is him. I don't think he was in their database.
