Buzz up!

For the past three years, the University of South Florida Bulls football team has flirted with national attention. Games with West Virginia have been memorable landmarks; as was last years thumping of Florida State.

Everybody knows the importance of this weekend's game against the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville.

"It's unbelievable," said Jeffrey Neil Fox, owner of Bucs and Bulls Heaven, the main merchandiser for USF gear, "a new coach and a new season; last week's blow-out and this historic game tomorrow … a victory over the Gators would be like a win over West Virginia and Florida State on steroids."

The glow from wins in previous seasons that put the Bulls in elite football company didn't last long. Subsequent losses sent the fledgling team back into relative obscurity as quickly as it had gained its fame.

Now, the team stands on the edge of recognition again, facing a University of Florida football team that always dances in front of a national audience. The game is Saturday afternoon in Gainesville.

Caravans are planned, bus trips set, tailgating spots are being scouted. Oddly, though, there were no pep rallies or other student events taking place today at the Tampa campus.

That doesn't take away from the atmosphere on the Tampa campus, though.

"People are excited about the opportunity," said Jeremy Sharpe, assistant athletic director for communications at USF. "Florida has such a great program. It's been one of top programs over the last five years, right at the top of the heap."

A win would be huge for the Bulls, he said, but the team has to follow through with wins over its Big East rivals to have a successful season.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”
