Hillsborough’s 4x100 DQ’d; Mitchell and Walton fail to reach triple jump finals

Hillsborough High’s hopes of winning the Class 3A boys state track and field championships just took a big hit when the Terriers’ 4x100 relay team was disqualified for an exchange outside the zone and the inability of Carlton Walton and Terrence Mitchell to reach the finals of the boys triple jump.

These setbacks occurred within a matter of minutes here at Showalter Field in Winter Park. Following a 1-3 finish by Mitchell and Walton in the long jump and a seventh-place showing by their 4x800 relay, the Terriers were leading the boys meet with 18 points. But in the 4x100 qualifying round, No. 3 runner Rodney Johnson was ruled to have made the exchange to anchor man Mitchell outside the 20-meter zone and the yellow DQ flag was raised.

Moments before that, Mitchell had won his qualifying heat of the 100 in 10.85 seconds. But the toll of three events in such a short time—and in heat exceeding 90 degrees—was taking its toll on Mitchell, as well as Walton, who was also in the 4x100. According to Hillsborough coach Joe Sipp, when the two reported for the triple jump, the official told them they had to take their three qualifying jumps immediately. Sipp argues they needed to receive the standard rest period and were not given the rest.

Sipp said he planned to protest the results of the triple jump. Without the points from that event, Hillsborough’s chances of winning the meet are slim.

T-Rex has the worst luck with track officials.  Then again people who run FHSAA finals in most sports aren't usually that competent to begin with as i know from first hand experience from my high school weightlifting days.

I agree.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to seeing him run with Hopkins, Lamar and Webster in the 4 x 100m relay next year. Maybe we can land a few more football, track players to join them, like we already did with Mut.
