Now at North Alabama, Bowden offers some former blue-chippers a fresh start while maintaining his own powerhouse, which is considered one of the elite Division II programs.

Bowden said he's eyeing USF, where Skip Holtz recently replaced Jim Leavitt.

"I'm waiting for the fallout," Bowden said. "And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm waiting for the … ones they don't feel fit into their program, and there's going to be a bunch. And they're going to be great players."

Bowden has been the beneficiary of once promising BCS-caliber players who for one reason or another never flourished at major Division I programs. Last year, Bowden had 27 former BCS players on his North Alabama roster, including Mico McSwain (former freshman All-American at Ole Miss), Preston Parker (Florida State) and Quinton Andrews (West Virginia). There were four transfers from Florida State, two from North Carolina, two from Troy, one from Alabama, one from Miami and a handful of others.

"For me, I never considered it that way (as a stepping stone), honestly. When I was offered the head job at South Florida, and I'm sincere about this, I never thought I would ever go anywhere."

    Jim Leavitt

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”
