Touted Tampa cornerback Terrence Mitchell has reneged on his commitment to Florida State and instead says he will play at USF, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

Mitchell had been considered one of the Seminoles key commitments but his decision now leaves the Seminoles scrambling to fill a dire need. FSU desperately needs to fill gaps in its secondary and some thought Mitchell, one of the best prospects in the state, could have provided FSU with immediate help.

LaMarcus Joyner, the Pahokee High cornerback who some consider the best at his position in the nation, is still headed to Florida State. The Seminoles also have commitments from defensive backs Chad Abrams, Terrence Brooks and Mike Harris.

Losing Mitchell, though, hurts.

FSU will now hope to earn a commitment from prized safety Demar Dorsey, a standout safety at Lauderdale Lakes’ Boyd Anderson High. Dorsey had been a Florida commitment but is no longer, according to multiple reports. Dorsey hasn’t publicly commented on his recruitment – and likely won’t make his college choice official until signing day next week – but speculation has indicated he could be headed to FSU.

The Seminoles are also recruiting Jeremy Deering, a safety from Leto High in Tampa.

Before losing Mitchell, Florida State had been in line to finish with a recruiting class that might have ranked among the nation’s top five. Now, though, the class has grown weaker – if only a bit. Among FSU’s other defensive back recruits, Brooks and Harris are cornerbacks.

Mitchell’s decommitment is also a clear indication that USF, with new head coach Skip Holtz, will be a formidable foe on the recruiting trail. Mitchell, a local prospect for the Bulls, was reportedly swayed by the opportunity to play early.
