DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois football program was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Thursday as the Huskies were named to the AFCA's Academic Achievement Award honorable mention list. NIU was one of only 39 teams in the country to earn honorable mention status, and is one of only two Mid-American Conference schools to be recognized, along with Miami (Ohio).

The AFCA annually honors the top Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in the country based on their Graduation Success Rates (GSR). Notre Dame and Miami (Fla.) shared the 2009 AFCA Academic Achievement Award with a GSR of 100 percent for members of its freshman football student-athlete class of 2002. Nine schools achieved a GSR of 90 percent or higher, while NIU was recognized in the next group of 30 teams...

...This year’s award marks the second time the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) formula has been used to select the winner. From 1981 to 2007 the award was presented based on a formula used by the College Football Association and AFCA.

Thirty-nine other institutions will be recognized for graduating 75 percent or more of their football student-athletes. Nine of those institutions — Alabama, Boston College, Connecticut, Duke, Navy, Northwestern, Penn State, Rice, Southern Mississippi — achieved a rate of 90 percent or better. The remaining 30 institutions are: Air Force, Army, Central Florida, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Marshall, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, South Florida, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Troy, Tulane, Utah State, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington and West Virginia."

i'd like to know why these guys aren't in the 90-100% class?

Air Force, Army, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest

not to mention Duke and Northwestern...

Notre Dame isn't a surprise at 100% but Miami is.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
