The Upsets Have Begun; Expect Controversy and Surprises to Follow

By PETE THAMEL

(Excerpt)

....

So where does this leave college football? The three teams with the best chances of going undefeated are not even ranked in the top five. Considering the caliber of their conferences and the lack of a league title game, No. 6 Penn State, No. 8 Brigham Young and No. 10 South Florida all have a better chance of going undefeated than any of the other 15 unbeatens. (No. 18 Boise State and unranked Tulsa also have a shot, but each has miles of ground to make up before being a factor in the national title race.)

This season is again setting up for controversy. Imagine undefeated B.Y.U. playing in the title game over a one-loss Big 12 or SEC team? Or undefeated South Florida or Penn State sneaking into the title game over a blue blood like Oklahoma, Louisiana State or Alabama?

Penn State has the brand name and the talent to be a factor in the title race. Its games against Wisconsin and Ohio State are on the road, but the Nittany Lions should be the only Big Ten team in the national title conversation.

If there are only 2 unbeatens and we are one. We will play for the MNC in Miami.

Imagine the college football world if USF played BYU for the NC !! HA!!

Conferences would have to defend those choices because the alternative is admitting their own myopic view of the world... if the BCS defenders do not support USF v BYU, then I would expect a playoff (prob. a Plus One).

Man... is this the best spectator sport on earth or what?

It's amazing to me with the parity in college football now that everyone could be so amazed (not this message board...well...sometimes people seem to be a little too surprised when we win!) that USF could waltz into the N.C. conversation. The scholarships were decreased so all of these "traditional" schools are not able to keep as much of the talent as they used to. That translates to parity, much like the NFL with a salary cap, and that equals good quality football. Penn State and USF unbeaten at the end. Not such a bad championship game...
