MEN’S SOCCER OUTRUNS PITT 1-0, SET FOR WEST VIRGINIA ON SUNDAY

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 19 University of South Florida men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play as they defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 1-0 at USF Soccer Stadium.

Junior Zak Boggs tallied the game-winner for the Bulls in the 21st minute and the USF defense held the Panthers to just one shot on goal in posting their fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Attinella improved to 4-0 on the season and notched his second shutout of the year.

The Bulls remained in first place in the BIG EAST Red Division with a 5-1-1 overall record and moved to 3-0-0 in conference action.

“I think it’s a good way to start,” said USF head coach, George Kiefer. “Unfortunately the BIG EAST doesn’t give us a lot of time to enjoy it, but I want our guys to enjoy it tonight. West Virginia just beat DePaul at DePaul, which a lot of teams don’t do. We’re excited to play West Virginia. West Virginia has become a real rival for us. We look forward to that .”

In the 21st minute, sophomore Javed Mohammed played a cross into the box that Boggs got on the end for the only goal of the game. It was Mohammed's second assist of the season.

“I knew the cross from Javed was coming,” said Boggs. “He put it there and I got lucky and hit it in the goal.”

USF started the game aggressive with seven shots in the first 20 minutes. They finished the game out shooting the Panthers 15-4, including 8-1 on goal.

“The team is coming together and we battled adversity early on and we are continuing to fight through it,” said Boggs.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m., the USF and WVU game will be televised live courtesy of Bright House Sports Network. WVU is 2-3-3 overall and 1-0-2 in BIG EAST play after defeating DePaul Friday night. This is the 16th meeting between the teams, with USF leading the series 10-3-2. The last contest between these two teams took place on Sept. 30, 2007 where the Bulls came out on top 1-0 in 2OT.

For those who can’t make the game, follow the game on the USF Press Pass, which features live video and audio streaming or watch live stats. Both can be found at GoUSFBulls.com. Bulls fans will also be able to listen to the game on USF Press Pass and WBUL 1620, as the voice of USF men’s soccer Jim Henderson calls the play-by-play.
