Louisville's starting tight end quits team

ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Cardinals lost their starting tight end when Wayne Riles quit the team, leaving Louisville without a tight end with game experience.

No explanation was given for Riles' departure, which came as a surprise to the coaching staff, said football sports information director Rocco Gasparro.

Riles had been in Louisville all summer working out with the team, but went home to Albany, Ga., two weeks ago when players took a break from summer conditioning. He informed coaches Friday that he won't be back.

The 6-foot-3, 243-pounds Riles appeared in 13 games last season, mostly on special-teams duty. Coach Bobby Petrino declined to comment on his departure.

Without Riles, the Cardinals will look to fill the void with a pair of incoming freshmen -- Scott Kuhn and Gary Barnidge -- and senior Adam McCauley, who had been moved from tight end to fullback before last season.
