Selvie & Leavitt on Latest Awards Lists

TAMPA, Fla. – University of South Florida defensive end George Selvie is among 15 semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given annually to college football’s top defender.

The Bednarik is presented by the Maxwell Award Club, which also coordinates the George Munger Award.  USF head coach Jim Leavitt is a semifinalist for the Munger Award, which is an annual award for the top head coach in college football.

Selvie has certainly been among the top defenders in college football. He leads all NCAA FBS players in tackles for loss with 27.5, while sharing the national lead in sacks with 13.5.  He is just 4.5 tackles for loss shy of tying the NCAA single-season record of 32 established by Jason Babin of Western Michigan in 2003.

Selvie is the only BIG EAST defender on the list.

Selvie is also a semifinalist for Ted Hendricks Award, which is given to college football best defensive end.

Leavitt success with the USF program has been well chronicled this season. He is the only coach in USF football history and has led the Bulls from birth all the way to a No. 2 BCS ranking in just 11 seasons of play.  The USF program has won 62.3 percent of its games since its inception in 1997, which is the 17th best winning percentage in college football history.

The 6-3 Bulls travel to Syracuse this Saturday for a Noon game on ESPN Regional.  The broadcast can be found on WFTS TV in Tampa.
