How does the potential strike affect signings... if there is no season... does his contract remain valid?  and does he have to stay an extra year on the contract?

just curious

Its not a player strike, it would be a lockout by the owners.  The baseball strike was a big difference when the red Sox signed Sosa and Wetteland but then the contracts were no good because the time of the strike effected the last contract and the players were not actually Free Agents as they had not fullfilled the prior contract.  The hockey contracts signed now will be good when the union and owners agree on a new contract.

CULLIMORE GOES TO BLACKHAWKS

"When Jassen Cullimore was allowed to become a free agent, the Tampa Bay Lightning made it sound like that was really just a technicality, and that negotiations to re-sign him were under way. But it looks like they did not negotiate hard enough.

On Thursday the Chicago Blackhawks are set to announce they have signed Cullimore, who agreed in principle to terms with them Wednesday. Chicago has plenty of money to work with and had already signed Matthew Barnaby and Curtis Brown. The Chicago Daily Herald, which broke the Cullimore story, says the Blackhawks might still go after a top-price forward like Paul Kariya, Pavol Demitra, Ziggy Palffy or Glen Murray.

Cullimore was thought to have been seeking a three-year deal averaging about $3 million per season, and reportedly Tampa Bay only offered a two-year, $4 million contract.

Chicago head coach Brian Sutter told the Daily Herald "There were nights when we weren't nearly as strong or physical enough a team to play on defense... now we've added Cullimore. He's a big, strong man who plays big and strong." Cullimore is 6-4, 240 and was the longest tenured Lightning player.

After breaking his wrist in Game 3 of the first-round series against the Islanders, Cullimore was out but then came back sooner than expected to help defeat Philadelphia in Game 7 of the conference finals. He then played a big part in slowing down Jarome Iginla, for the most part, as Tampa Bay defeated Calgary for the Stanley Cup. "

That's a tough loss for the defense.

I wonder if the same thing that happened to the Bucs will now happen with the Bolts - good players all of a sudden have a high profile, so other teams are willing to pay a premium for them because of that high profile.

Once you assemble the machine that wins a Championship, everyone wants your parts.

They must have been really far apart. As pointed out above, Cully was the longest tenured Bolt player and I would have thought if TB was anywhere in the neighborhood he'd prefer to stay here. This sucks.....................

Guest bolter

yeah there was a gap between the parties, but there is only so much money to go around.  Re-signing Khabi, Marty, and with several players going to arbitration limits the money to throw around especially since they are still a small market team

The Bolts offered 2.5 mil a year for 2 years, according to what I read today.  Chicago offered 2.5 mil a year for 4 years.

I'd take the security of the extra years, too.
