WVU and USF have so far this year played, ECU & UNC respectively.  Conviently enough both ECU and UNC have already played this year, so this creates a comparison opportunity.  Lets take a look at what it indicates, you stats lovers....

This year, USF is averaging just over 30 ppg while WVU is averaging 48 ppg.

UNC 31, ECU 34  Both teams scored at least 4 touchdowns.

If you take a look at the UNC-ECU game, you will see both teams were very similar with ECU being a little better by winning in the end

Both teams had over 20 - 1st downs, ECU passed for 406 yards on UNC while UNC passed for 344 yards on ECU... both teams had over 400 yards total yards, UNC 423 and ECU 470.

What happened when USF played UNC and how does that performance compare against the ECU teams achievements?  Lets take a look...

Against UNC....

USF had 428 total yards

ECU had 470 total yards

USF had 234 Passing yards

ECU had 406 Passing yards

USF had 194 Rushing yards

ECU had  64 Rushing yards

USF had 3 Fumbles

ECU had 0 Fumbles

USF intercepted 3 passes

ECU intercepted 1 passes

USF scored 37 points

ECU scored 34 points

*What does this tell us?  ECU had a better and more effective passing game but USF rushed much better and for more against UNC.  USF only scored 3 more points on UNC than ECU but was given the ball from pass interceptions 3 more times than ECU was given by UNC passers.  USF handled the ball poorly with 3 fumbles while sure handed ECU had none.

--------------------------

ECU 7, WVU 48  ECU was held to 1 score, while WVU scored 6 Touchdowns and 2 Fgs.

WVU had 30 first downs, while ECU put out 13.  WVU passed for 202 yards, while ECU only managed 54 yards passing.  WVU had 599 total yards and ECU put up 160.

What happened when WVU played ECU and how does that performance compare against the UNC teams achievements?  Lets take a look...

Against ECU....

WVU had 599 total yards

UNC had 423 total yards

WVU had 202 Passing yards

UNC had 344 Passing yards

WVU had 397 Rushing yards

UNC had  79 Rushing yards

WVU had 0 Fumbles

UNC had 1 Fumbles

WVU intercepted 1 pass

UNC intercepted 0 pass

WVU scored 48 points

UNC scored 31 points

*What does this tell us?  Both teams passed at will against ECU.  UNC had trouble rushing against ECU but WVU made them look like ragdolls, 79 to 397 yards respectively. WVU put up 3 more scores on ECU than UNC did.  WVU was turnover free, while UNC gave up a fumble to ECU.

-----------------------------------------

How does all this help us make a comparison?  Well both UNC and ECU are very close to each other, in terms of thier styles, gains, capabilites and most importantly of all both teams have played either WVU or USF this year!

So lets compare the stats from these games and see what would happen head-to-head between USF and WVU.

Total Yards:  428 to 599, advantage WVU

Passing Yards: 234 to 202, advantage Nobody

Pass Att/Comp: 18-33 to 22-25, advantage WVU

Rushing Yards: 194 to 397, advantage WVU

Yard p/Rush: 3.7 to 7.4, advantage WVU

Penalties: 7 to 3, advantage WVU

Turnovers: 3 to 0, advantage WVU

A more extended look, lets take a look at the "D"... of each time and compare that between USF and WVU.

Total Yards Against: 164 to 160, advantage Nobody

Passing Yards Against: 85 to 54, advantage slightly WVU

Pass Att/Comp Against: 11-27 to 9-18, advantage slightly USF

Rushing Yards Against: 79 to 106, advantage slightly USF

Yard p/Rush Against: 2.3 to 3.2, advantage slightly to USF

Penalties Forced: 7 to 6, advantage Nobody

Turnovers Forced: 4 to 1, advantage USF

*We now have the most accurate comparison as possible this year as if both our teams played against the same opponent.  Offensively WVU clearly has the superior offense and will score more points than USF, the WVU rushing game averages more than twice as much per carry than USF and the WVU passing game is more accurate.  USF often makes more mistakes in both penalties and fumbles.  Defensively, both teams are very similar, both held to less than 170 total yards and less than 90 yards passing.  Rushing defense both hold teams to 2-3 yards per carry on average.  USF has the edge on forcing turnovers.

My conclusion is that for USF to win, they will have to somehow change their game and stop getting penalized.  They will also have to learn how to hold onto the ball and stop fumbling.  Thier defense is going to have to someone find a way to make WVU turn the ball over from sure handed backs and a QB that has yet to toss an INT this year.  WVU will score points and more often than USF unless the Bulls force some takeaways.

The teams will be playing each other, so I will adjust the scores down by 2 TD each.  My final score prediction is WVU 34 - USF 17.

I'm struggling to determine which is more pathetic....

The fact that you take the time to post something like that ^^^.....

.....or the fact that you actually believe ANY of that makes one SHRED of difference come tomorrow night @ 8:00 p.m.

Poor Mounty.  Poor, poor Mounty.

yeah-- don't bother to mention that USF pulled it's starters, including Matt Grothe, in the third quarter.

and went away with a 27 point win-- not a 3 point win. It would have easily been a 34 point win if UNC didn't score with 1:09 left in the game and our third string defense on the field.

You've proved nothing, provided nothing of any value to this board

I move that we ban this goof

Both teams have not played ECU. We played ECU in our bowl game last year, ergo, it was last year's team, both for the Bulls and the Pirates.

If you want to mention that, then I will mention WVU put its 2nd string O and D on the field with 9 minutes left in the 3rd Quarer and the 3rd string O-D on the field in the 4th.  Our 4th RB scored a TD on ECU.  Based on the metrics prior to removing the first string team, you could add 27% more to all WVU's stats if you want to go that route... what would that be? 750 total yards? 65 points? 40 first downs?  I say we leave that argument out for USF's sake.

Stats are for people who are trying to convince themselves they can't lose while knowing they just might...
