LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- Syracuse has decided to pay Wyoming $200,000 to get out of its contract to play football in Laramie in 2009.

UW received a letter last week from the Big East Conference school, asking to be released from its contract to play UW on Sept. 26, 2009 in Laramie. UW agreed to terminate the deal.

The $200,000 buyout will be paid in 2009.

The Cowboys played at Syracuse last season and lost 40-34 in double overtime.

"It's just horrible, and it shows no class," UW football coach Joe Glenn said Wednesday. "We signed the contract, and we went out there last year to play them. It doesn't show much character on their part."

But Kevin McKinney, UW senior associate athletics director for external affairs, said it is part of the business of college athletics.

"It's not a good part of the business by any means, and it's a bummer that we went out there and they decided not to come back," McKinney said. "There is always the possibility of fighting this and going to court. But this is done all the time, and we are sometimes on the other end in trying to get out of a game."

UW is trying to get out of its 2010 game at LSU. That contest was scheduled when Lee Moon was the athletics director and is a one-time "money game" for which UW will get an estimated $600,000.

According to UW's 2007 football media guide, the Cowboys have only one non-conference home game in 2009 with the loss of the Syracuse game. Wyoming is scheduled to open its 2009 season against I-AA Weber State. UW is scheduled to play at Colorado and Bowling Green in its other non-league games.

"We want to schedule a home game against a comparable opponent," McKinney said. "We would like it to be a home-and-home series with the first game at our place."

The contract with UW and Syracuse was done a couple of years ago when Gary Barta was UW's athletics director.

McKinney said the best way for UW to prevent this from happening again is to increase the buyouts in the contracts.

For instance, he pointed to the home-and-home series with Missouri in 2011-12 has a $500,000 buyout.

"The problem is when you have that high of a buyout, some teams won't sign," he said.

I'm suprised to see Cuse' opt of of this game. They normally have some the harderst OOC games in the Big East.
