As seen in a recent USF Alumni e-news article...

USF Lakeland's Pending Name Change

June 25, 2007

LAKELAND  The University of South Florida Lakeland by another name is expected to be even sweeter for the city and Polk County.

USF Polytechnic  as the school may soon be called  not only will be Florida’s first polytech public school but the name itself showcases Lakeland’s push toward becoming the high-tech center of Florida, said Marshall Goodman, the campus CEO of USF Lakeland.

The USF Lakeland board of trustees unanimously approved changing the name of the new 16,000-student campus to reflect its focus on a polytech education and broaden its student base. The new name becomes official if the university’s main board of trustees approves it as well as the state board of governors.

Ã¢â‚¬Å“Lakeland is a city, but the university serves an entire region,†said Sherrill Tomasino, president of USF Lakeland’s board of trustees. “I think (the name) will define what the campus is going to become.â€Â

The name also will identify Lakeland and Polk County as a region that is high tech, said Steve Scruggs, executive director of the Lakeland Economic Development Council.

Ã¢â‚¬Å“We’re trying to promote Lakeland and Polk County as a high-wage, high-tech area and polytech speaks to that,†he said.
