An anonymous letter alleging that four University of Cincinnati football players and four football recruits engaged in sex with a former UC soccer player at a party has touched off a university investigation.

The letter dated Feb. 14, 2007, and signed "A Concerned Athletic Department Employee," also alleges that "alcohol was involved in the 'party,' which took place during a recent football recruiting weekend."

The letter writer continued, "Evidently, someone videotaped these sex acts and tapes of the sex session have been distributed around the dormitories. A number of our student-athletes have viewed the tapes and validated the rumor."

The letters were sent to university President Nancy Zimpher; Daniel Cummins, the director of Judicial Affairs; and Barbara Rinto, the director of the UC Women's Center.

UC spokesman Greg Hand said Tuesday an investigation into the allegations had begun.

"There was a letter that was sent anonymously to the office of Judicial Affairs," Hand said. "The Judicial Affairs office has begun an investigation to determine if the allegations have merit."

Rinto said the letter was sent through the campus mail last week, and it was delivered to her office Friday. However, she wasn't in the office that day and didn't receive the letter until Monday.

Asked about her reaction when she read the letter, Rinto declined to say.

"I would prefer not to comment on any of it," Rinto said. "I'm part of the (committee) that's looking into it. I'm trying to understand what really did happen and trying to resolve it as soon as possible."

Hand said there was no timetable for how long the investigation would last.

"The consequences under the code of conduct can be severe," Hand said. "Because of that, the important thing is making sure the information we have is accurate. Accuracy and completeness rather than setting a timetable."

Hand also wouldn't say what exactly was being investigated.

"When a matter is under investigation," Hand said, "Judicial Affairs doesn't compromise the investigation by going into detail about what it's looking into."

The letter writer said he or she wanted anonymity because of the fear of "reprisal from our senior leadership (of the athletic department)."

The person also wrote the reason why the letter was submitted to Zimpher, Rinto and Cummins instead of athletic director Mike Thomas was because "I have no confidence in our senior leadership of the Athletic Department to complete a thorough investigation."

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
