Report: Erickson to be named football coach at Arizona State

MESA, Arizona (Ticker) - Dennis Erickson is close to being named the football coach at Arizona State, according to a newspaper report.

The East Valley Tribune reported on its website Saturday night that a deal is imminent to bring in the 59-year-old Erickson, who won two national championships at the University of Miami.

Erickson, who is currently the coach at Idaho, has also coached in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

The Tribune reported that his hiring could come as early as Sunday.

Erickson began his college coaching career at Idaho and returned there in 2006, leading the Vandals to a 4-8 record. His career college record is 149-64-1 in 18 seasons at Idaho, Miami, Wyoming, Washington and Oregon State.

On Friday, Idaho athletic director Rob Spear confirmed that the school had given Arizona State permission to talk to Erickson.
