Bulls Getting Ready For Bowl

Published: Dec 5, 2006

TAMPA - University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt has been pleased so far with his team's early preparation for the Papajohns.com bowl against East Carolina.

"Right now we're focused so much on fundamentals and working with a number of the young guys," he said. "Our older guys are doing some reps against each other just to try to stay sharp. We've had two-hour practices; we haven't gone longer than that yet. But I've been happy with how they've come out. Their attitudes have been good. We do realize how good East Carolina is."

USF (8-4) and East Carolina (7-5) were conference rivals when the Bulls were members of Conference USA from 2003-04.

"We're a couple years removed from playing those guys but they've definitely upgraded since we've played them," offensive coordinator Rod Smith said.

ODDS AND ENDS: Leavitt turned 50 Tuesday. To celebrate he said he was going to "go to the [uSF] basketball game a little bit, go home, get some rest, watch some film. That's it." … Junior Courtney Denson, who was the starting quarterback for last season's opener at Penn State before switching to receiver than cornerback, has moved back to receiver, Leavitt said.

Gregg Becnel

This is great news ... he has speed and obviously was not getting reps at DB. Hope to also see him return punts, he has moves.

He fumbled at Penn State which was returned for a touchdown by a Nittany Lion defender... Then he was pulled for PJ.

Fumbling as a QB is different than at WR ... I have no worry about him fumbling.

What I expect  8-) No reverses the first 2 games, then at Auburn  :o

This is good news considering he went to Auburn recruited as an "athlete."

Hope his athletic ability is not wasted.

was that a fumble?  i thought it was a pass that was intercepted that he threw across the field?  seems so long ago thanks to Grothe :)

Actually, I think he fumbled and threw an INT...but I'll leave that to our archivists to dispute.
