Okay, I know a few folks around here dabble in video editing.  I have all the equipment/hardware to create, edit and copy DVDs - DVR, DVD recorder, mini DVD camcorder and notebook with DVD recorder drive.  The main thing I want to do is copy sporting events and movies from HD/wide format channels and cut out the commercials plus take the miniDVDs and copy to the 4.7G DVDs digitally (not in real time).  BTW, all my devices are RAM compatible so I'm considering retiring the DVR back to Brighthouse.

Saturday I started playing with the free software available w/this equipment.  All of it was insufficient.  One of the softwares, Roxio, allows for a $40 upgrade which is $10 cheaper than if I bought it off the shelf.  I'm leaning to that direction.  Secondly is it possible to copy a "finalized" DVD off a DVD-R or -RW disc and edit the video and then copy it to a new DVD-R or -RW disc.

Any advice for a novice on software and ways to accomplish the desired tasks?  Advantages over keeping the DVR or direct recording to the DVD recorder/player?

If you can output directly from your DVR to the computer, use Windows Movie Maker to cut out the commercials.  You can then export a DV-AVI lossless file, commercial free.  Easy to use, and free with Windows XP.

From there, you can import the AVI files and use a program like Adobe Encore DVD 2.0 to master your discs.

Sports!!! Are you sure you aren't making porn ;)

Done that.  Don't wanna ever see me havin' sex ever again.  Not pretty.  Plus it's a waste of 2 min. on a 6 hr DVD.  ;D

Adobe Premiere ($600) or the 'lite' version Adobe Premiere Elements (<$100)

The Adobe's Premier Elements version  is a very powerful and more than enough to do most people's Digital video editing.

Don't jump on that Roxio offer before you do your research. I've tried it for video editing and have not been very pleased.

Also,  turning a finalized DVD back into a digital file (such as .avi, mpeg, etc.) requires rip software...so if you're looking around, that's what you're looking for.

I'll ask a guy I work with who does video production work what he'd recommend for a PC (unless you have a Mac).
