This whole take is a bit overblown. Gerdes is happy whenever his school is referenced on national TV, whether as USF or South Florida. There's a simple box in the weekly notes that politely asks that they be referenced as "the University of South Florida" on first reference, and then "USF" thereafter. It's nothing they push on anyone. Not like they see an incorrect reference and send angry letters.

Southern Cal, on the other hand, really doesn't like to be called "Southern Cal." The argument they use is that you don't call UNC "Northern Car" ...

yea but UNC is the University of North Carolina.  while USC is the University of Southern California.  

i have heard UNC be referred by North Carolina, and UNC.

likewise, you can call USC.... southern cal

personally i say who cares...as long as there is no mistake by anyone who you are talking about.

USC is also the University of South Carolina...

MSU is another duplicate... up north its Michigan State... down south its Mississippi State.
