Candlepin bowling is a unique game found mostly in New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Eastern Canada. What makes this game different from other forms of bowling is the shape of the pins and the size of the balls. The pins stand 15 3/4 inches tall with a taper on both ends giving them the appearance of candles hence the name candlepins. The balls are 4 1/2 inches with a maximum weight of 2.7 pounds (with no finger holes).  The game consist of ten frames or boxes in which three balls are rolled down a 60 foot maple bowling lane at 10 pins.  All pins knocked down remain where they fall until that frame is completed enabling the bowler to use fallen pins (wood) which are still on the playing area to knock down other standing pins. This creates a whole new game with an endless number of shots.  Unlike other forms of bowling, Candlepins have never had a perfect game, the highest sanctioned score to date is a 245.  If you are ever given the opportunity to try Candlepins we encourage you to do so, just don't expect to get the same scores as other forms of the game.  For more information on the game of Candlepins including rules, locations, records and tournaments go to http://www.candlepinbowling.com.  Good luck and have fun.

No smazz...duckpins are shorter and fatter...candle pins are tall and thin  they look like a candle.

No offense on feminine comment but that was the case where I grew up or at least in my circle of friends.  The following is a story out of my old local paper. I played at this place probably 20 times when I was a young man.

No offense taken, actually, i knew of ten pin bowling when i was a kid, but the only 10 pin lanes around closed down when i was about 7... so candle pin was the only bowling, and there were leagues everywhere!
